It may be stuck in hibernation. Just press and hold the power button for 8 seconds until it shuts down all the way. Power it back on and you should be good

SOURCE: Black Screen / Computer Stays in Standby Mode

Completely remove the battery and unplug the power cord for a few minutes. Reinsert battery and power up. You can also hit F8 when starting and see if you can boot into safe mode.

SOURCE: Toshiba laptop won't wake up from stand by or hibernate

I had the same problem on my Toshiba Satellite U305, struggling with it for the past 4 months and having to use Shutdown each time I was done using it. Very frustrating! Toshiba worked with me several weeks, telling me to re-install Vista and all the fixes, which took a lot of work backing up etc and this did not fix the problem. Today they finaly told me to try entering this special command and it fixed my problem. Maybe it will fix yours too.

Create a shortcut on the desktop and to make the shortcut, right click on the desktop, choose Create Shortcut, enter CMD.EXE where it asks you to "Enter the location of the item". This will create an icon on the desktop that looks like a mini-command prompt. Then on the desktop, RIGHT click on the CMD.EXE shortcut/icon you have created and select "Run as administrator". This will open a command prompt window. Here in the black-box with white letter window, enter the command "powercfg -h on" (without the quotes). Reboot and see if the problem is resolved. This fixed my Toshiba Satellite that had this problem.

SOURCE: Screen is black after sleep/hib, Dell studio XPS, Vista.

Hibernate problems are generally associated with the Video Driver. Suggestions:

  1. Update the BIOS to the current release. Here is the latest for the 1645. http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&ServiceTag=&SystemID=STUDIOXPS1645&os=WV64&osl=en&catid=&impid=

Hi,
There are some problems which may cause that:
1. Memory defect.
2. South bridge defect.
3. Bios Defect.

Try this one to find out which one is your problem:
1. Remove your battery and plug the external monitor via VGA or HDMI port and turn your laptop on with the AC cord attached to the outlet. When you can see its welcome screen via external monitor then it has a problem in its LVDS driver. But when you see nothing then try the second step.
2. Unplug the Cmos battery located under the palm rest on the left side of the touch pad, wait for about 2 minutes and then you can try to turn it on. When nothing appears on the screen then the problems may cause by your south bridge defect. To know this problem just touch your south bridge while it is turned off, when it is warm then your south bridge is working but something wrong with its pin. When it is cold then your south bridge has a problem in it.

When you see the two above step yield nothing then better for you to bring it to a service centre.

Good luck

My hp pavilion elite m9152p shows a black screen. If i leave the computer for a few hours and come back the computer is still on, but the screen is black. monitor says no signal... I always have to hold...

Does the power button flash when there is a black screen? Could be that the laptop is in hibernation mode. Go to the tray icons next to the clock, click the battery symbol, more power options, and change the settings of "turn off display" and "put the computer to sleep" to "never". Usually to get the computer out of sleep mode, you just click the power button to turn it on again.
Hope this helps.

My display screen goes on and off

I find sleep mode nothing but trouble, eventually corrupts window files over extended use, go into power options, go to stand by and select never and click apply, next go to hibernate "top right" and click, make sure the check box is clear, if not! remove check and click apply and restart your laptop.

How can I enable hibernation on my HP Mini 5101?

Hello,

Welcome to FixYa, the world's largest product support community.

Generally all Windows OS has an option for sleep & hibernate.

Windows XP Users
  • Sleep Mode
By letting your computer idle for a period of time, i.e. not moving the mouse/touchpad, or not pressing any keys except when playing a video, the screen or desktop monitor will go dark. You can resume the computer by moving the mouse/touchpad or by pressing any key on the keyboard.
  • Hibernation or Standby mode
Click Start, click on Turn Off Computer, then click Stand By.

Windows VISTA/Windows 7 Users

To put Windows VISTA & Windows 7 in Sleep or in Hibernation, the steps basically the same. First click Start, then click the small arrow head located to the right of the Start Menu, then you click Sleep or Hibernate.

To put Windows 7 to Sleep or Hibernate, click the small arrow head right next the word Shut Down then click Sleep or Hibernate.

My laptop keeps saying hibernating and i cannot get to menu screen.

Definition: Hibernate is another option for powering down your laptop. When you use Hibernate all data will be saved to the hard drive in a compressed form. Once you start up from Hibernate mode you will be able to work with the applications and documents you left open before putting the laptop into Hibernate.
Hibernate is best used to conserve laptop battery power when you will be away from the laptop for more than a few minutes. You can put your laptop into Hibernate overnight or when you will be away from it for a few hours. Examples: Rather than shutting down my laptop each night, I use Hibernate to help conserve battery power and enable me to access my open files quicker in the morning.

If you are not going to use your computer for a few hours, it is a good idea to put it to sleep (also known as mode) to save power. If you are not going to use the computer for more than a day, it is usually best to turn it off.

hope it helps.... please rate if you like my post...thanks

I have an E series lifebook. The laptop just got wiped clean because it had a bad virus. I took it to a professional tech and he did the work and also updated windows. the computer was working fine prior...

You can turn Sleep and Hibernate off in Windows but this sounds like it might be your Bios putting the system to sleep. In windows go to power options and turn sleep and Hibernation off but double check your Bios as well for a possible setting there that will put the computer in sleep or Hibernate mode.

Computer sleep mode

Turn it off at night or if you leave it for an extended period. It still uses power even in sleep mode, plus the longer Windows runs, the more chance of corruption.

My Gateway 500s monitor is stuck in power save mode

Try tapping the F8 key while booting the computer, you will get the start up menu, choose safe mode, when you log on, go to the display settings, that is right click on the desktop, properties, screen saver, advanced and make sure that hibernation is off, along with turn off disks or whatever , probably see turn off monitor after XX minutes, I make ours 15 minutes (150 computers and servers), I don't let the disks turn off. Choose always on also, not home/office. Try this and see if these settings help.
