All was fine yesterday; today, the picture on the Acer monitor (connected to a Mac Mini OS10.8) flutters, flickers, and moves around. I've checked the cables and they seem OK. It started when the computer was turned on, so it probably wasn't overheating. The Mac is about 6 months old and no other problems.

SOURCE: Acer AL1916W 19" problem
Hello mat78, Unfortunatelly the problem is hardware based. You will need to have the monitor repaired in a service center. Here's why: LCD/TFT monitors don't produce light themselves. They are composed by a matrix of transistors (TFT - thin film transistor) that have the property to reflect or allow some light (certain wavelenghts)to pass through them. They don't produce light by themselves. Instead there is a fluorescent tube (neon like) light inside the monitor and that's the light source used in order for you to see what's on the screen. A flourescent light is suposed to last pretty much, i don't think yours has a problem, you say it works for some seconds or so. Instead your problem is most probable with the inverter circuitry that powers on that light. It's a common problem among these types of monitors but in your situation i don't think it will be an expensive repair. In the case that the screen is dark (in a dark place you can't read or view anything on it) but if you apply light to it ( a flashlight or something) and you see something, then the problem is most likely to have occured with the invertor. Try to ask at a local service center for a repair, this shouldn't be an expensive procedure. Hope this helps.

My Acer AL1711 packed up last week, I bought a new Acer and noticed they have a 3 year warranty. Give Acer a call on 0870 853 1000, and they`ll do a warranty repair with free pick up and return - great service! Not sure if you need proof of purchase or not, luckily I had mine.

Hi this is the way how to examine what's wrong with your LCD monitors. Power on both CPU and monitor. After it went dim and blank, you have to check if you can see the image on the screen or not by shining a flashlight into the screen, not directly but find the best angle to the screen and take a look very closely. If you can see the icons or any image, there will be a minor problem. Like me, I can see window image using flashlight and check lamps inside. Some of them were broken and it is easily replaced. If you cannot see anything on the screen, there'll be some problems with inverter board. If you have soldering tool and want to fix it by yourself, check the caps first. It may cause this problem. Some caps might show leaking or burn spot on the board because of too high temp. If you don't have soldering tool, you better go get a technician to do so.

The lamps have not failed as you believe Steve. If they fail, then a protection circuit inside will shut them off all together.
Acers have a habit of capacitors failing. This in turn sends dodgy power to the inverter circuit and through to the lamps.
This is not a design flaw, it's just age. Capacitors can die early of course, but it's not common for them to go before the warranty period is up at least. Normally 3-5 years is what you can expect from them.
If you understand electronics then the job will be easy, if not have your local TV tech give it the once over before real damage is done.

Aloha Mike,
Aloha Mike,
Tried the monitor on another Mac Mini and same problem.
OK so monitor is likely toast. You may ask why? It's only x months/years old. Modern electronics are made in factories. Companies go to the factories and ask them to make their product. Very little is proprietary. Parts are ordered from other companies and assembled in the factory. Each part is built to a tolerance of 2 to 5% failure rate. Add all those %s together and you get a curve of 1 day to 5 years operational use. Yours failed somewhere on that curve.
