Automatic choke problems

Car used to rev on starting automatically as though one was depressing the accelerator on off on off. Now it doesnt and the motor on start runs only for about 10 seconds and conks out. Usually on the 3rd try the motor runs but still needs to warm up for a few minutes before you can drive off....auto choke issue?

Automatic chokes do need attention sometimes. They become tired, gummy, springs and linkages wear or become weak.

A variety of methods have been employed to provide automatic cold-start enrichment and to arrange for it to be smoothly reduced as the engine warms.
In the early days of unfussy engines the methods were fairly crude but by the time of your car the automatic choke was quite sophisticated or complex.

I don't know the method used by Porsche but most cars used a flap to close, choke or strangle the intake and below is a much simplified description of a common method used on European cars.

Pressing and releasing the accelerator pedal before cold starting allows a bimetal spring to engage a stepped snail cam which increases the idle speed and at the same time closed the choke flap. Once the engine is started it would soon die from an over-rich mixture and so a small vacuum servo is employed to open the flap a small amount.
The bimetal spring is heated by an electric element and as it warms it will tend to open the flap and move the snail cam until the engine is warm enough to be able to idle, etc. without enrichment, typically 2 -4 minutes.

Yes, spring may have broken or maybe it just needs adjustment. There is a high idle cam that makes the card idle higher when the choke is closed or partly closed.

ok, your problem is your fuel. your carborator cannot sit that long with fuel in it. try getting a can of carb cleaner and spray it while its running, or have a mechanich clean it if you don't know how.

SOURCE: 2002 Porsche Boxster - had squealing coming from

Mine did that off and on for a month with no other problems then it started making a loud suction noise and the check engine light came on. I took it to the dealer and they said the "oil separator" needed to be replaced.
After the repair I never heard the squealing again.

85 Nissan 720 with Z24 motor when first started it will run great for a short time then fall on its face spits and sputters and u can't keep it running

Naturally aspirated carburetor with automatic choke.

If youre in winter (northern hemisphere) then the choke will set when you depress accelerator for cold start.

After the engine starts it unloads (opens) the choke slightly. As the engine warms it continues to open the choke until fully open.

Likely the choke is not opening as the engine reaches normal operating temperature and fuel mixture us too rich causing poor combustion and black smoke.

Cold choke baffle has 3/16 opening minute I pump accelerator choke thermostat closes primary baffle shut no air to start I force choke open to start why insufficient air to run at high idle?

Your engine probably has an automatic choke device that adjusts automatically with engine temperature. To set the choke when the engine is cold you have to depress the accelerator to the floor and release it completely. You shouldn't have to depress the accelerator again to start the engine, turn the key the engine should start. As the engine begins to warm up it will also begin to initially run faster then it will start to run rough. At this point you have to press the accelerator and release it again. The auto choke mechanism should allow the choke butterfly to open. There may be a number of stops in the system and the choke butterfly will stop again still not fully open and only become fully open when the engine is at operating temperature. Hope this answers you question, Rgs. Bob

Automatic 330i 2001, if i start accelarating at 3rd gear the RPM keep increaing and if i release the gas the car should change to next gear but i does not...at low RPMs it is working fine

the gearbox is a "fuzzy logic"system.gearchange depends on accelerator pedal position/revs/load.if you drive without depressing the gas peddle more than a third down you should find all gearchanges much smoother.(if you drive with gas peddle almost hard down all the time yhe car will hold gears longer...poss 4500 revs or more......

Accelerator stuck

Hey. do you have an automatic choke on the car? If so, it could be that the automatic choke is stuck in the open position. You could trace the the accelerator cable to see if it`s getting stuck. I had this problem with the automatic choke on an Escort Ghia once and then installed a manual choke instead.
