HP Photosmart D7160 Printer needs service?

My two year old HP Photosmart D7160 Printer sat idle for about 1.5 years. Now I plug it in to my new MacBook and install the driver. All inks are full, but error message on the printer's small screen says "Ink system has failed. Unable to print. Refer to printer documentation. Error: 0xc18a0306. Turn power off then on again."
I have powered down&up the printer several times, unplugged from MacBook and wall, replugged in. Nothing seems to work. I no longer have the printer documentation. Any ideas before I trash it? Afraid to invest money in servicing when I can buy new...
Thanks!

Hi Karen, This likely is either due to Bad/Expired Printhead or it could be defective printer ( hardware failure ). However you can give it a try. Follow the steps below and it should solve the problem, else we need to consider it could be defective Printhead or printer hardware failure.

The Photosmart D7160 does not has "*" and "#" because it is not a fax capable printer.

*** Fix your HP Photosmart D7360 (Reset Code/Master Reset) ***

1- Turn off power and unplug from power source.
2- Open right side of printer (looking at the front).
3- Disconnect,by pulling gently, both white flat ribbon cables off the main circuit board.
4- Plug in power source and turn printer on. Wait till you get a error message and push "Ok".
5- Unplug power source.
6- Reconnect the flat ribbon cables by aligning and carefully pushing into the conectors on the main circuit board.
7- Plug in power source and turn printer on (Printer preparing occurred).

The error message 0xc18a0001 "Ink System has Failed" is now gone

I am going to buy a new computer today with Window 7. Do I need to do anything to make sure my HP Photosmart D7160 Ink Jet printer works?

Yah, go on support.hp.com and verify that it has a Windows 7 driver installation for it. Some printers from HP do not. Some have a driver that came with windows 7 for usb only, in which case you can hack it to add Standard TCP/IP port once it has been installed USB. Of course that might support ALL of the things that the printer can do.

Photosmart D7160 shows yellow empty even with NEW cartridge

Printhead problems are more common than perceived. Have you disconnected the power cord for the printer to flush the built-in board? Disconnect the printer USB cord as well. If this doesn't resolve the problem call for an RMA. Printheads are not inexpensive.

I have a HP Photosmart 7160 and a brand new Fujifilm digital camera. I took 4 pictures and tried to print photos. When I place the SD 4GB card in it reads "memory card error" on the printer. What do I do...

You are using a new camera with an old printer.
Check the following:
- Try using a 1 to 2 GB SD card. The printer may not be able to hande one this size.
- Try taking a photo, in a smaller resolution, and save as JPG.
- Try plugging in the camera to the printer and print from the camera.
And the best option, is to transfer your photos to your computer, and print from there.
Take a look at a program called "Thumbs Plus" it has worked well for me. http://www.cerious.com/
