The TTL contacts on the Nikon are different to the Vivitar. You can put a remote flash trigger in the Vivitar and use the Nikon's built-in flash to trigger the Vivitar flash using the remote flash trigger.
Press the Flash/Up button repeatedly to cycle through the different flash modes. Your choices are Auto (lightning bolt and letter "A"), Force Flash (lightning bolt), Red eye reduction (eyeball), and No Flash (lightning bolt in circle with slash through it).
Make sure you're not in the macro mode. There's a slide switch on the end of the camera, near the SD card slot. Set this switch to the mountain position. Also bear in mind that the flash is for still photos only, not for videos.
Check the contacts for the battery to make sure they are clean and shiny. Then insert 4 brand new AA batteries observing the correct polarity and try again. Also check your users manual to be sure all of your setting and connection to your camera is correct.
