My dvd player is a atapi dvd w dh16w1p from microsoft, it use to play movies but all at once stopped doing it, it plays music great and I can burn info to cds, but it says I need a mpeg2 decoder for the movies to work I use vista home basic, where do I get a free decoder, or do just need the drivers, my computer is made e-machine T5082
Try downloading VLC player, if this does not play your videos then it is your Drive that needs a driver update or has gone bad. If VLC player does play it or asks you to install mpeg2 codecs, then all you need to do is google "mpeg2 codec download for windows media player X" (X being the current version of WMplayer you are using). The reason behind this problem is that Windows media player does not come preloaded with a full library of codecs, there are packages of codecs that you can download such as divx codecs that will have the majority of commonly used video compression decompressors.
Since MPEG format is so popular nowadays, therefore it is very necessary to obtain an excellent MPEG player in order to achieve a better watching experience without any quality loss. Here are some programs for your reference if you would like to try some players to play MPEG. you could try Leawo Blu-ray Player, which could support a lot of formats including AVI and it's a region-free and 4K player.
