That's the traditional Apple icon for 'Where's my hard drive?' The computer can't find the hard drive to load the operating system. Either something has come loose, or your hard drive is damaged. They are replaceable, though it would be simpler to return it to Apple, if it's still under warranty. OWC (Other World Computing) rather famously figured out how to replace the hard drives, even though they were not intended to be replaceable. They have several fairly inexpensive models, and their website has several videos that walk you through installation. If you don't want to work on it, you can take it to an Apple Authorized repair center, and they can repair it, though it may be a bit more expensive.

Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Notice that the reset instructions are different for MacBook and MacBook Pro's if you have an internal or detachable battery.

This is how to reset SMC on most modern Mac laptops:

Shutdown your MacBook Air / MacBook Pro
Connect the power adapter to your Mac
On the MacBook/Pro's keyboard, hold down the Shift+Control+Option keys and the Power button at the same time
Release all keys and the power button at the same time
Boot your Mac as usual

Here's the key sequence to hold down:

Do keep in mind that by resetting the SMC you will lose power specific settings, like the time it takes to sleep a Mac and other customizations to power settings. No big deal, but if you have made many changes to your hardware behavior you will want to adjust stuff like sleep behavior again.

Resetting SMC is different for non-portable Macs:

Shut down your Mac
Disconnect the power cord
Press and hold the Mac's power button for 5 seconds
Release the button

Your Mac cannot find your hardrive.
Boot your Mac from the install disk and reply with findings.

The folder with the question mark indicates that the computer is unable to boot (start) from the hard drive. I would ordinarily tell you to put in your system disc and boot from it to use Disk Utility to fix your drive. But you say your DVD burner is broken.

1. Hold down the power button to turn off your machine.
2. Hold down Command and S together and press the power button to turn the machine back on.
3. It will boot to a black screen with white text. Once it gets done, type

fsck -fy

and press the Return key. This will check and hopefully fix your drive.
4. Once it's done, it will either say, "This disk appears to be okay." (or something like that, or "File system has been modified." If it says that the file system has been modified, return to step 3 and type fsck -fy again (and then press Return).
5. Once you see the message that the disk appears to be okay, type

reboot

and press the return key.

The computer cannot find the operating system files to start up. Use a start-up disk or utility disk to start the computer then re-install the system files.Hold down C key while starting from disk. DO NOT REFORMAT the disk or you will lose all your files. Just do a simple System install.

You have a disk/file system problem. Use your system install disk and in Dish Utility, repair and when OK, fix permissions. Do this after each install--can usually just use DU and verify+fix. If you must, then boot in Target mode (hold T on boot) and connect to another Mac, Use Firewire, if can, else may need to remove disk and put in external. If no fix, then will need re-install.
