Toshiba projection screen tv (5 years old) showing black box over center of screen when playing dvd's. It is not dvd player as I switched to several different players we have and they all show black box. TV Video One button which is used to play dVD's encounters this problem.

Hi, Do you see same solid black box in all inputs or just in dvd picture? If solid box appears only with dvd picture then its generated by dvd player, check dvd player Menu and turn off any subtitle settings. And if solid black rectangular appears in all inputs of TV like cable etc then check Close Caption feature in TV and turn off CC function. Hope this will solve your TV problem. Thanks.
It sounds like you have the closed-captioning set to "text" mode. When set this way, if captioning is present the set clears the area where the text goes. You don't see the box on channels or programs where captioning isn't being used. On most TV remotes a single button controls captions, so it's easy to get into text mode without knowing it.
Looks like you've narrowed it down to a problem in the TV's chroma processing circuitry. This could get expensive to fix and these TVs are known for some other serious issues. I would guess that you can locate a service tech for around $100 or so to get a diagnosis since the company I work for charges $85.00 for call within 10 miles of the shop. Call Toshiba and they'll locate a local authorized service center.
Had the same problem but was able to fix it by simply doing the following:
"this is closed captions turned on your TV. get your original TV remote and look for a button that says "Captions" or "CC", and keep pressing it until the TV says "Off". if it doen't have one of those buttons, you will need to get into the menu of the TV and turn off closed captions there. It is probably set on "Text1 or Text 2" right now, and it needs to be set on "Off"
yes its on your remote. its the c.capt button. or go under menu/enter and pan to the left untill it comes up. and turn it off by scrolling through the caption buttons
This sound like a problem with the Closed Caption, on many sets if the C.C. is set to text a black box apears, and since it only happens on DVD you might look at the DVD menu and see if it has this Text featcher in the Closed Caption menu and turn it off
