Installed new CD drive and computer wants to format hard drive

I installed a new CD-ROM to a Compaq presario CQ60 laptop and now all it wants to do is format the hard drive. I put the old CD drive back in and it boots fine but does not see the drive in the computer menu.

That fixed it perfectly, all i had to do was go in and re-install some of the software that was used with the burner. Thanks again!!

Hey nothings wrong with both ur cd drives try doing this:
Click on the Start button.
If you're using Windows XP, also click on Run.
In the search box (Windows 7 and Windows Vista) or the Run textbox (Windows XP)
type regedit and click OK or press the ENTER key.
This will open the Registry Editor program.
Locate the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder under Computer/My Computer and
click the '> or (+) icon next to the folder name to expand the folder.
Continue to expand folders until you reach
the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
Click on the '> or (+) icon next to the Class key to expand it.
You should see a long list of subkeys open up under Class that look something like this:
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
On the rightside column.....delete upper filters and lower filters

restart the computer......that should fix the problem and you can use your old cd drive again......but if it doesnt......visit the nearest tech-centre

SOURCE: Compaq Presario R3000 not booting up

set the bios/cmos to boot first of your CD drive. get your support discs and restore to original. your hard drive OS has failed and needs to be re-installed. the problem maybe is that when you do that option you will get all your data erased. your solution to that since you can still get the data on the drive when used as external is to back it up. then full restore your system.

if you dont have your restore kit, you can use your Windows OS to fix it, repair option when you boot from CD.

SOURCE: Windows xp pro will not boot with new hard drive

Its hard to tell just like this without having the computer in hand to check and test the jumpers and connection and all, but quick like this i think it might be a trojan virus that corrupted the boot sectors of the old hard drive, and when you copied the stuff from the old to the new, the virus followed and infected the boot sectors of the new one too. Try to reformat completely using the original windows install disk, and not the system restore/reinstall disk and reinstall windows after the format with the original windows disk again. If I was right, it should boot up OK with a fresh format and reinstall with the real windows CD, then install a virus scan and a spyware scan and scan and clean the old drive completely 2 or 3 times to be sure theres nothing bad left on it, then try to copy the whole disc, but skip the Windows repertory, the Program Files one too and the Documents and settings one also, cause those 3 are the ones most prone to corrupting a fresh install even if there is not any viruses in them. If it does not boot up OK after formating and reinstalling Windows though and says it's unbootable, then either there is a config error in the BIOS of the laptop, or the IDE controller that drives the disk is defective. If it's the BIOS settings, it's gonna be easy enough just changing the settings and won't cost you too much, and if its the IDE controller... then that's another story cause it's integrated in the motherboard like any other computer, so basically another computer will cost less than a new motherboard for a laptop. So if that is the case and the IDE controller is shot, you can still try to use an external USB drive to run the computer but not all computers support booting from the USB though, so before buying a brand new external drive, check the BIOS first to see if it does support USB booting.

SOURCE: PXE-E61 Media Test Failure Check Cable on compaq presario 2100

A PXE-61 error message is most likely a faulty hard disk.
Try reseating the hard drive first and if you still get this error message again then you need to replace the hard disk.
To boot up with the CD you maybe able to press the F12 function key when you power up the laptop, this will bring up the a menu option to select an alternate boot device. If this option is not available then go into the BIOS configuration and change the bootup order and make the CD as the first boot device and the hard disk as the second device. You can can it back later.

I installed a new hard drive. on the compaq presario v2000. all im getting is realek media error. i went into bios set default. no resolve. tried cd rom first. no help.jumper pin is outter two verticle....

Does the laptop BIOS "see" the new drive? If not the drive must be "Initialised" first, otherwise it will not recognise you have a drive in the bay. Place the drive in a USB caddy and using another laptop or your laptop with the old hard drive in it, select Control Panel and Adminastrative Tools. Select Computer Management, From the side panel select Disk Management to view selected drives. The disk drive that is connected via USB will be there. Click the drive and select initialise then format and select a drive letter. OR
With the new drive in the laptop bay, set the BIOS menu, on your laptop, to use DVD/CD ROM drive as first boot device.
Place your System disk in the drive and boot from the disk.
Follow the instructions, (if any) on the screen and let the new system software initialise and format the new drive.
Hope that helps

Usually it means your hard drive has crashed.
The PXE is your computer trying to connect to a network server (virtual hard drive).
Did you have any important files on the computer?

MY cOMPAQ pRESARIO CQ60 fell and cant complete boot

Most likely in this case, the damage is to the hard drive or its connection to the motherboard. The CQ series though has a three point screw attachment for the hard drive so Im more inclined to think that the shock of the landing has damaged the read/write head on the hard drive. If you happen to have another hard drive for a laptop, try installing a new drive and run the installation disc and see if it will complete and boot completely....if it will then the problem was the old drive.

I need to format the hard drive using vista

ok follow this steps now. 0. Configure your BIOS and select DVD/CD ROM Drive, SATA or IDE for the first booting of the system. 1. you should have CD/DVD ROM SATA or IDE. Any of it you can use for the operations, and it's should be attach on you system unit. 2. When you are done on step 1. You can now Enter the Vista DVD/CD Disk Installer inside the CD/DVD ROM SATA or IDE. 3 Restart your system unit to proceed to the operation. 4. Automatically the system will launch the Operating System Files and it will Record all your information inside your hard disk.

I cant install xp in my compaq presario cq61-132tu model. when i put xp cd in my rom there is a blue screen comes n shows error and there is no sata option in my bios plzzzzzzzz help me in this condition

In some cases your newer OEM computers have a BIOS code in them to only accept newer operating systems such as Vista or Windows &, and will not accept XP. Try this...

If you don't mind losing everything on the drive, you should do a complete format of the drive. If you have another computer, you can use an EIDE/SATA to usb adapter and connect the drive to another computer, the computer will read the drive as just another harddrive, and you can access it through the control panel > administrator Tools > Computer management > disc management. There you can delete the partitions on the hard drive. When that is done, put it back in your laptop and boot with the XP install disc.
