I have the same problem. The end that plugs into the Targus has become intermittant due to the cable near tge plug is almost broken. Anybode know ware

The cable part the plugs into the chill mad has to be pulled tight and tucked under the computer to hold in that position in order for my mat to work. otherwise it turns off.

  • Anonymous Aug 01, 2008

I have the same problem: the jack that plugs into the Targus will only work if I hold it in a certain spot (I'd thought of taping it myself, also). I recall having the same problem with my Sony Walkman eons ago...I assume that I will probably have to buy a new cable,,,

  • Anonymous Oct 24, 2008

I'm having a similar/same problem. The part that plugs into the mat itself began working wrong, and I had to keep wiggling it for it to run. Now, it doesnt' work at all. Its not the cord, its the interior part that broke. I've only had it a couple months and I hate the idea of buying a new one so soon. If there is a means to repair it, I'd like to know.

  • dinny08 Dec 01, 2008

Actually mine quit working. And it was the second one that had the same problem. I had the first one for more than a year and I assumed I probably "mistreated" the cable. But this one quit working after a month!
Anyone knows of a better brand?

  • Anonymous Feb 24, 2009

The cable is about a few months old, and already I have to jigglle it to get it to work... it's very frustrating, because I thought I was careful with the plug. So I think I need to replace the plug, but where can I find one with out have to buy a new chill mat?

  • Anonymous Mar 02, 2009

I have had the same problem with the Targus Chill Mat PA248 and its USB Cord. I am on my second one, the first one died under warranty and Targus replaced. The second one is less than a year old and died today it gets a crack in the wiring at the end of USB plug and shorts out. I called Targus today and the supervisor hung up on me. You can not buy a replacement part and once the Chill Mat is out of warranity they won't help you. Targus had the throw away mentality and go buy a new one. I am calling corporate office and complaining once I cool off.

This problem is being caused by a wire becoming disconnected from the switch in the usb power cord. The easiest way to solve this problem is to open the switch using a flat blade like a knife, and either reconnect the loose wire yourself or to completely remove the switch and connect the wires together completing the circuit and allowing the fan to operate. I hope this helps.

As others have stated the power supply circuit is pretty shabby. I've had two of these breakdown in my household. The components are fine, but their not fixed on the board well enough and neither is the wiring in place very well. All the above described the same problem i've had and there's two options.

Option 1: Saw, tear, or chew through the plastic to reveal the circuit board. Pull the power socket off the board and reattach it yourself; probably replace the wires as well.

Option 2: Rest an item underneath the power cable to maintain a pressure which pushes it upwards. I emphasise underneath and not above as while you may find keeping a downward pressure on the power cable will work for a time, its pressure acts in a "see saw" like fashion and pulls the power connector off the board, away from the wires. If you keep an 'upward' pressure it 'see saws' the piece towards the board which shouldn't cause any harm at all.

Note: its not a distance problem where the socket is falling back into the unit, i.e. its not like when a usb connector starts 'falling into' your computer and you gotta carefully slide them in; the socket will remain at the same distance whether you open the board or not.

If your Targus Chill Pad/Mat is still under warranty (1 year) call Targus Customer Service at 1-877-482-7487 and they will replace the the mat and or USB Cord. But be aware once its out of warranty they won't help you.

Are you sure the problem is at one of the plugs?  My Targus chill mat also just quit working and I found it is one of the connections to the in-line switch that has come undone.  You can open the switch easily with a straight razor blade or paring knife blade (it is not glued so it comes apart easily).  You can re-solder the wire to the switch if that is where the problem is.  If not, I guess I can't solve this!

Just rip it open, where the cord plugs into it theres a bad connection on the back of that plate, unscrew the plate then use plyers and flatten the 3 metal pieces that they are touching the metal connections and dont move, then close it up and it works

How do you get it open? I can't seem to do it :(

Has to be held on with tape? Does it fall out of the usb port?

Or is the usb port broken and require the cable be held in a certain position to make contact? Or is it the end on the mat itself?

May need to have your usb ports resoldered, or possibly a new cable, but never seen a cable go bad. What happens if you use the usb port for other things?

Send me $12 + S&H, and your unit and I can cure this USB cable problem.
When I am done you'll have a "pigtail" out of the chill pad to plug into your PC.

Power cable problems, also

open it up and splice the current power cable and connect it permanently to the USB connector. The problem is the power plug gets loosened after some time and can't make a proper connection.
