Not sure what you mean, yes you can use your phone on another line, and you can only transfer a call if it has that feature.

How do I transfer a call to another line after I put the caller on hold? This is a nortel networks multi-line phone.

Generally you would not put the caller on hold if you are going to transfer the call, so while you are on the call press transfer then make the second call where you want to transfer to

I have an AT&T 958 speakerphone. I need to transfer a call to another number so I press flash then dial the number. But, when i press flash again to connect the 2 calls, I too am connected and its a...

This is a standard phone so I'm assuming you're using this in a home or small office, connected direct to a regular phone line, and that you're using calling services from your phone service provider. 3-way calling works as you describe: you press flash to get dialtone again, call the other party, then press flash again to connect the two so all three of you can talk. The point is that this is 3-way calling, not a forwarding or transfer function. You can't transfer a call to another number this way. Since you initiated the 3-way call, the connection requires you to be there; when you hang up the connection between the other two parties is broken.

Your line may also have call-forwarding, which lets you program a number that calls to your line will reach if you're away (an alternative to using voicemail or an answering machine and needing to check messages). But this doesn't allow you to transfer a current call to another number, only incoming calls.

The only way you can transfer a call is when you have the switching equipment (an office phone system, for example) at your location, and have at least two outside phone lines available. Then the system would allow your phone to disconnect, and still maintain the connection between the other parties. But both of the phone lines would remain tied up until the other parties hung up, and if you only had two lines you'd be unable to receive or make any other calls.

Residential customers with a single phone line don't have any option to transfer calls.

Take care.

WHEN PRESSING TRANSFER OR PICK-UP BUTTONS SHOWS 'INCOMING CALLS' ONLY

Sounds like your transfer and pick up button are actually direct inward dial (DID) lines. To see whats programmed under those buttons, press feature *0 then press your transfer button. It will probably give you a line number and port assignment for the line.

Transfering a call

Press TRANSFER and dial the extension (or press the DSS button). When they answer, announce the call and hang up. On their end, they don't have to do anything except stay on the line.

Call forwarding to outside line

To send a call to another telephone within your system, or to an external
telephone. You may not be able to transfer a call on an external line
to an external telephone, depending on the capabilities of the lines.
1. Make or answer a call.
2. Press the feature button then press 70.
3. Call the person you want to transfer the call to.
4. Stay on the line if you wish to speak to the person first.
5. Press the Release button to complete the transfer.
If an external call is transferred to a busy internal or network
extension, or is not answered after a few rings, the call automatically
rings you back.

Transferring

Since you're asking this question in the Partner 18 category, I'm guessing it's a Partner phone.

1. Transfer from a system phone is done by pressing the TRANSFER button and either dialing the 2 digit extension or the DSS button programmed for that phone.

2. Transfer from a single line phone is by flashing the hookswitch (FLASH) button and dialing the 2 digit extension.

3. Transfer into voice mail is done by programming a button or pressing FEATURE 14 and the 2 digit extension.
