Vulcan freeloader 260 suddenly turns off after heating to temperature. Control unit was just replaced but still doing the same. I was told by another person it is the thermo couple but the fitter said

Unit is in good condition. Never had an issue until recently when the gas was turned off to the property and then turned on due to an unrelated issue.

The thermocouple makes sense, if it does not send enough electricity to the control unit it will shut off. The thermocouple was probably moved when a new control unit was installed. Check to be sure the pilot flame touches the thermocouple, if not realign it else replace it.

SOURCE: Can I replace the pilot light on a Vulcan

Hello...how old is the unit? Today it is very common for gas appliances to have electric igniters instead of a pilot light. Unless you are familiar with gas controll/regulator valves I would not recommend trying this yourself. I believe it is more likely a faulty or dirty thermo-couple. Again , unless you are familiar with the opperation of gas supplies ,controls ,etc. DO NOT ATTEMP to do this yourself!!! Gas is very dangerous for the less than well informed! Call a service pro or speak to and ask for the assistance of a knowledgable friend.

We are getting a brown colour in our hot water from our Vulcan freeloader (assume this is where its from anyway). Is this a fixable problem or will we need to look at a new unit? The current unit is about...

unfortunately there is no fix other than replacing the tank, it has a lot of rust buildup inside over 18 years, which is a very long time for a hot water tank today.

How do I turn it on? I press the "on" button and

The manual says:
http://www.coinwash.com/temp/rinnai.pdf

"For the name of the Authorized Distributor or Installer nearest you, please contact your local HVAC dealer or gas service technician, visit the Rinnai website (www.rinnai.us), call Rinnai at1-800-621-9419 or write to Rinnai, 103 International Drive, Peachtree City, Georgia 30269"

Manual says that the remote is for setting temperature.
When you turn on hot water spigot, tankless water heater will heat the water to the set point temperature.
If water heater is not set up to use remote, then tankless unit will heat to 140 degrees F.
"With the MCC-45-4US remote control installed the water temperature is adjustable from 96
to 180°F. The water temperature cannot be set to a temperature other than 140°F
without the use of the MCC-45-4US remote control unit. If you require a temperature
other than 140°F you must install the MCC-45-4US remote control unit."

"Error messages are displayed on the remote control units, simplifying service calls."

Page 9 of manual shows hot to set temperature using remote.
Water taps must be shut off to set temperature.
Circulating pump must be turned off.
"Simply press the H or C button until desired temperature is displayed"
"green in-use indicator will display"

If your unit is not working, the manual says to contact local plumber.
