Dvd player isn't working properly

Video transfer is very memory and CPU intensive, you should check to make sure you have at least 2 Gb of RAM. Other culprits could be an older, slow CPU, or onboard or insufficient video card.
If you haven't already, you should test the output of your video by playing it on your pc, or making a test DVD and playing in a DVD player. If the video looks good, then the jerky playback on the pc doesn't really matter. If the video's bad, you should check the above possible reasons, also make sure your video drivers are updated, and that you have the most recent driver for the Pinnacle Dazzle.

This seems to be a problem with

1- Your DVD / CD player , which is not reading the video files properly probably because of a damaged lens.
2- Your RAM is less than the amount which is required to play the video file properly.
3- The CD / DVD itself if it has scratches or has done bad, if this is the case with all video cds/dvds then this is not the problem.

Now to check if it's not a problem with your DVD or CD player reading the disc,

Try copying the video file to your hard disk and play it , if it works ok , it could be the reason that your CD/DVD lens is damaged and not in best condition.

Yes, it is a software problem -- your computer is either "too slow" or "too busy" to _simultaneously_ run all the software that you want to run.

Close all web-browser windows.
Close any file-sharing programs (uTorrent, Napster).
Close all applications (Microsoft Word).

Now, your computer will have more "resources" available to run the DVD-player software, without the "jerky" effects.

Regarding the problem with the sound on your DVD player, I would suggest you to make sure the audio cables (red and white) are connected properly to the TV and player.

Also, try using a different set of cables since those ones might not be working and this is why you are not getting audio. On the Memorex remote you will find a mute button, make sure it is not activated.

I quite agree with you. But to be very sure, play also with Video CD and Audio CD plates respectively. These two show play properly.

Once a DVD player lens is getting weak, it would start selecting DVD plates, but would play Video CD and Audio CD well. And if the lens gets weaker, it might not play Video CD's properly.

You could use a cotton board to clean the lens of the DVD player, and see if it would improve while loading DVD plates.

What are your PC specs for RAM and CPU speed? VLC player is an amazing player. Are you saying this player is jerky on the same videos that another player was NOT jerky on? That seems very odd. I have yet to experience a jerky playback on VLC for movies (mostly HD).

Is your PC doing something else in the background while attempting to play the movies? Hit Control, Shift, Escape while playing a movie and look on the bottom at how much CPU % the PC uses before and during movie playback.

check all the leads at the back of the unit to make sure they are properly connected

I am assuming that the DVD plays normally on the display of the Dell 745.

Then the issue(s) may be with the:
1. Networking configuration/set-up of the Dell and/or the Epson;
2. ethernet cable;
3. configuration/set-up of the projector or the Epson itself.

A couple of things you can try:
1. Optimize your networking throughput.
1.1 Increase your PCI Latency Timer to 128 or 255 in the Dell's BIOS/CMOS setup (if present);
1.2 Try running DRTCP.exe and/or TCPOptimizer.exe appropriate to the Dell's OS;
1.3 Disable all other networking activities on the Dell. This may include auto updates, security/antivirus checks, etc. while running the DVD;
1.4 Slim down Dell's startup programs to bare minimum;
1.5 Increase your OS' swap file to roughly double your onboard memory
2. Try running a hub midway between the Dell and the Epson.
3. Verify that it is not the Epson that is problematic by playing a video source to the projector’s Video or S-Video port. If it is, then you have narrowed down the problem to the playing capability of the Epson.

Alternately if all else fails, perhaps you can try using:
1. a DVD player to the projector’s Video or S-Video port; and/or
2. a USB external DVD drive or a CompactFlash card (with a copy of the movie) direct to the 1815p
while settling the main issue.
