The 6041 isn't an answering machine. If you have a separate answering machine connected to your phone, consult its documentation. If you subscribe to a voicemail service provided by your telephone company, contact them for instructions.

Your machine is set to the announce mode, where it plays an outgoing announcement but does not record incoming messages. You want to switch it to the record mode. Since you declined to specify the model of your VTech system I can't tell you exactly how to do that. I can direct you to enter the model number into the search box here to download a copy of the manual.

The issue here may be the number of rings that are required to activate the answering machine. If it is the same or more than Verizon, then you need to change it if you can. If not then there is not reason to have both.

If your Phone service is recording messages, that disconnects your line. You need to have them turn that feature off, OR set the answering machine to answer is less rings, say two or three. If the FAX machine listens to the line, it can still be set at a higher amount of rings, say four, and should still answer any FAX signal as it's sent to the answering machine.

. Base unit Answer on
Lighted button you see may not be for ANSWER SYSTEM. Lights on Base units may indicate INCOMING MESSAGE already stored or all sorts of system ready lights.
Please do these three steps:
1. From the handset, Go to menu and set ANSWER system to ON once more
2. In the menu, set the number of incoming rings before ANSWER system turns on, to just 2.
3. In the menu, record a new message using your own voice.

then, Dial your own phone number from a cell phone to test.
Watch/listen as the incoming message is played. repeat any of the above if the system doesn't work.
Post a new question and include the model number and manufacturer of your system.

To have the machine answer faxes and record voice messages unattended change the answering mode to message centre. If you are home and pick up the phone , but it is a fax, not a phone call push *91 on the phone you answered on, and hang-up the phone. the fax machine will tyhen start receiving.

Change message
press menu on the base.
use the volume up and down buttons to change to the answ. setup
go to greeting and follow the menu prompts to record a new greeting, then select change to pick which outgoing greeting is played.
