There are several things in a tape deck that move when it is playing or recording. There are wheels on the spindles that take up the tape and those wheels are run by rubber belts. The belts get old, break or stretch. The other thing is the capstan. The capstan is a pinch roller that presses against a metal post. That post is the drive motor for the tape. The capstan roller can be worn or cracked, the motor might also not be working,
your have a jammed mecanical problem or the take up clutch requires maintinace, the device allways checks for macanical faults so you don`t inadvertanly damage a tape, it souds like a takup clutch assy, you must have knowlage of the working of your device internal in order to service this problem, If you have some knowlage i might be able to step you through the prosedure to replace the take up clutch assy, let me know if you wish to proseed.
You'll have to replace the regulator/motor assembly with a new one if the mechanism was damaged, which sounds like it was. Plastic parts break on these systems. If it is snowing and you don't have the resources to replace it right now, try to tape some plastic over the window using duct tape. But, this is only a temporary solution.
Unplug the TV/VCR/DVD Combo from the main power for a couple of minutes, the unit may eject the tape at the power ON. You can also try openening the unit, reset the loading posts and eject the tape by manually turning gears, motors etc..You have to know what you're doing otherwise, you will do more damage or get injured and don't forget HIGH VOLTAGE CAN KILL. While the washer is activated check the voltage on the washer motor fitted on to the washer tank. If there is voltage then the motor is fault and needs to be replaced. If there is no voltage trace the lead for any break in circuit. Normally the fuse is common to both the washer and wiper.
Ensure the rubber pinch roller presses the tape against the capstan drive shaft....ensure the capstan drive motor is turning..and the belt to the flywheel is snug, and not slipping. the tape transport engage relay might be stuck...a relay maybe corroded ...may need cleaning. Without seeing it cant say clearly what may be the problem. also ensure the tape tension/shut-off arm is under tension by tape that is correctly installed.
This needs a little bit of care but essentially you will need to unplug the power from the VCR then do the following: Remove the top cover Then with the front of the VCR facing you look to see if any of the tape is wound around a large metallic silver drum, that is tilted upward and is not flat, at the rear of the tape casing. If so then it means that it has wound around the drum and you will need to retrieve the tape to allow the eject mechanism to work. Do not touch the shiny polished part of the drum. To get the tape in usually means that you have to locate a plastic or metal cog wheel, usually on the right side of the VCR that you can turn with your finger. This makes the VCR motor move. Also there is one that works the tape eject mechanism. If you can find the one to wind in the tape before working on the one for the tape eject than you stand a chance of rescuing the tape, if not then it will get some damage. Don’t worry about turning the cog wheels with your finger as you can do very little harm to the VCR with no tools involved and no power on. Moving the cogs this way will only cause very small movements with the tape motor and eject so you will need to be a little patient and you will soon see what is happening. Once remove run a cleaning tape through the VCR before you use it again. With the limited space available her it is difficult to give you much more info.
If the motor is running but the belts are not, then they are probably shot. You can buy belts by size or buy a belt kit at MCM Electronics.
If the motor is not running it could be 2 things: 1. A bad motor or voltage to the motor.... 2. A bind. I've seen the grease on the capstan bushing get old enough to turn into a very hard tar. So check the motor and capstan for freedom of movement.
