OK all you genius's. Here's another and very probable solution. While having the same problem, I tried everything you've read here, and more. Nothing worked. But, I am smart enough to look outside the box. I have three more of these drives on another system in the office, so through the process of elimination, I found that the little "power supply" was the culprit of all my problems. Swiped one off of a known working drive, hooked it to drive in question, and Presto!!! Good reason to never get rid of all your cables and stuff when a device goes bad.

I had the same issue. My PC would not recognize the external Maxtor 3200 hard drive. Here is what I did. I went out and bought another Western Digital 500 GB USB hard drive, knowing that it probably had the same power supply. Got home and plugged the power supply into the Maxtor 3200 and immediately my Windows XP immediately recognized it and the drive was perfect. I checked with Radio Shack before coming home and they have the power supply needed there, with multiple choices on the size of the power input. The problem was the power supply cord.

I had the same problem, I thought the power supply was good, as the green light was on. I ordered a new power supply (on ebay, search maxtor 3200). the new supply solved the problem, so apparently as others have commented the supply must be weak or easily damaged by power fluctuations. I plan on only plugging it in when I'm actually using it in the future.

I ran into this same problem. Thanks to another post I found somewhere, here are the instructions that make opening the case simple. After plugging the hard drive in directly it worked fine.

You will need a long flat piece of metal.

On the sides of the enclosure are small slits.

If you look in the slits diagonally you will see a metal tab.

Slide the metal tabs about 1/4" towards the ends of the case. (there are 4 slides one on each corner)

The case will now open freely.

Since the Maxtor 3200 is fully PnP, it does NOT have a specific separate driver. I encountered a simple solution with my Thinkpad and the "disappearing" Maxtor 3200 500GB. Keep the Maxtor connected, restart your computer and go via Control Panel, System to Hardware Properies and finally Device Manager. Click on the driver which is marked with the yellow spot and uninstall this (USB Mass Storage) driver.
Restart the computer (in my case the Thinkpad T41 notebook) and it will automatically detect "new hardware" and re-install the required driver.
Problem over! It worked for me a couple of times, never failed.

I had a similar problem with my pc( OS=XP SP2) with the same external drive model. I was able to solve it by downloading and installing WindowsXP-KB908673-x86-ENU Hotfix Package from Microsoft Corporation. I hope it works for you.

In computer management assign a drive letter to the Maxtor drive.
Right click My computer. Select Computer Management. On the tree select Disk management. The usb drive will be listed here. In the upper right hand of the screen, find the drive with no letter. Right click on it and assign it a letter. Now the Maxtor drive should be visible in the file explorer. This works in Windows server 2003 and Windows XP.

Hey it's a bad power supply problem. I just replaced the power supply that came with mine with an old Toshiba laptops power supply. Once you get over like 50-75 gigs the power supply that came with it just doesn't work. I've been trying to solve this problem for about 2 yrs now... I had lost all of the photos of my son up until age 3 when my computer crashed and this was my back up. Replaced the power supply today and got everything back... glad I never paid for data recovery like I was about to 6 months ago.

I had the EXACT same problem you all had...the drive has been working for 1.5 years, has stayed in the EXACT same spot all that time, no problems whatsoever then one day, BAM, not able to been seen in Windows Explorer and none of the logical options here worked (Device Mgr., etc. - I did NOT use the software patch, this is unsafe in my opinion). As a last resort (and follow at your own risk as this will ***VOID*** the warranty), I cracked open the Maxtor case with a screwdriver, removed the screws holding the HD to the metal grating, removed the HD by bending off the metal grating (that is VERY sharp so be careful or better yet use gloves), high-tailed it over to Fry's, picked up a compatible after-market external casing (ask a sales rep for help if you are unfamiliar with this) and it worked like a charm!!! This is all VERY easy to do as I am a novice (although I had a PC guru buddy wathcing over me) and only cost me $30 for the casing. I plugged it in and it immediately worked and my data was restored. BACK IT UP IMMEDIATELY AND THEN ENJOY THE MUSIC, PICS, ETC. YOU THOUGHT YOU LOST!!! :)

I have an old Maxtor 3200 personal storage device, and lost the install disc. Now I USB connect it to a new computer, green light goes on but my PC will not recognize the Maxtor device. Do you know where I can download the install s/w so I can see the Maxtor 3200 in my E drive and access ?

The green light is blinking and the pc doesn't read the matrox 3200, i would like to know how to fix this problem, before i removed the matrox from my pc was working, then i put it back and the green light is blink and the matrox doesn' work.

I can also verify that the problem was the power supply.

If you'd like to troubleshoot, when you plug good power in, you should feel or hear the drive spin up.

I have two of these drives and both had failed. I found another 12V power supply and used it instead. With the original power supplies, I got the green LED but nothing else. With the replacement power supply, I have the LED and I hear the drive spinning. It now connects to my computer with no issues.

My disk was installed a utomatically when I plugged it in but not seen in My Computer, So:

The exact same problem happened to me. I traced it back to a power spike that damaged the
36 Pin to USB Adapter. I have not been able to locate a new adapter, but was able to use the disk as an internal hard disk. I opened the case (be careful - it's hard to open). There is a metal cage inside. unscrew the cage, then unscrew the adapter board (NOT the controller). The adapter board is where the external connections are. Remove the power connector and the 36 pin connector. Check the jumper setting - it should be set to "slave". Shut down the PC, open it up and find a 36 pin ribbon connector. Plug the connector into the drive, then connect the internal power cable. Slide the drive into a spare bay, close up the PC and turn it on. Your data should still be there.

Not a perfect solution. I got the external drive because of its portability, but at least your data may be usable. If you want to get a new external drive, it is pretty easy to copy the data from to the new drive using standard Windows copying.

The only "complication" will be drive letter changes. Windows may assign the drive a different letter. In my case, it went from "G" to "E". If you have applications that look to drive G (example Photoshop Elements), they will not be able to find it.

A workaround is to use an old DOS command "SUBST" to trick Windows into thinking drive "G" still exists. You'll need to put it in a batch file that executes at startup, since the substitution is lost on a restart. Note that windows explorer will also show two drives in the directory tree. Sloppy, but as I said, at least you will have access to your data.

I did what was posted above and opened the case, took out the Hard Drive and put it in a new external case and it worked perfect the first time. Opening the case is a little tough, but since I was going to void the warranty any way I felt like I had nothing to lose. This drive has been a problem (only starting once an a while) for almost a year. If you listen to the drive in the old case you will be able to tell if it is starting to run by listening to it closley BEFORE you rip it apart. Mine wasn't. I wish I would have done this a year ago. I have had this problem. My Maxtor 3200 was invisible on Win XP home, but visible on Win XP Pro and Mac OSX. It was also the wrong size 52GB instead of 500GB. I had used it once some time ago and managed to back some files up to it. Now I also have a Maxtor 3100 which has always worked fine on all operating systems. I rang seagate and they were very helpful (a help desk that helps, wow!).

Here is what I found. The 3100 drive was formatted with FAT32, (formatting is a preparing the disk for use, and there are 3 main PC formats). FAT32 is can be read and written on Mac OSX and Windows XP. Disks on modern Windows computers are normally formatted NTFS, (which Mac OSX can only read this format). The third format is HDS+ which Mac OSX uses.

FAT32 has a restriction in use that you can't have files bigger than 4GB. This should be of no concern to 99 % of us. That said there may be other reasons to use NTFS.

How does all this help? Its just background - you can format your drive and split it into partitions if you want before using it. You can do this on Mac using Disk Utility (even if you are going to use it on a Windows PC) - Or, as most people seem to use Windows PCs you can use the following....

Control Panel/Administrative tools/Computer Management/ now on the left under Storage select Disk Management/

Now you should be able to see all the drives connected to the computer in the right hand lower part of the active window. Before making any changes you need to be sure which is the removeable drive (Even if it isn't showing up in My Computer you will see it here). Remove the drive by pulling out the USB lead.

Right - now you can see which was the external drive. Reconnect it. You can see how many partitions the drive has and how they are formatted FAT32 or NTFS. In my case I had a small FAT32 partition a large NTFS and even larger 'unallocated' which was why the reported drive size was wrong. How it got like this I've no idea? I removed the FAT32 partition and reformatted all to NTFS. To do this sort of operation you right click on the map of the drive in the partition to change and select 'delete partition' to remove. To format the whole drive I removed all the formatted partitions and then right clicked to format the new unallocated area (Took 1.5 hours). Of course all data on the drive is lost doing this.

Now I get to the point which may help many of you. The drive was still invisible in Windows XP Home???

So I went to the utility Disk Management as described above and right clicked on the drive in the map. (It didn't have a letter like D or E showing). I selected change drive letter and paths. It didn't have a letter allocated (known as a mapping), I gave it an unused one E.

Then it appeared on the desktop, I unplugged and replugged it in as a test. Voila it now always appears!

I tried all the suggested solutions + followed the trouble shooting instructions. I tried every one of the on-board USB2 ports on the computer but inthe end the one thing that worked was plugging it in via an ancient USB 1 hub that the computer DOES recognise.. We'll see if it still recognises it tomorrow though!

Change brands - they are crap

I had the same problem with Maxtor 3200 usb on XP and this solution worked for me:
1.
select my PC icon on the desktop, right mouse button, select properties, device manager.
Select USB device that has the yellow bullet, right mouse button, select uninstall.
2. unplug maxtor USB and Power
3. Close down PC
4. Wait 2 minutes
5. Replug Maxtor USB and power supply.
6. Restart PC

I just found the sollution to this problem. My windows is in Swedish, so it might be hard to guide. But right-click on "My Computer", click "Manage". Under "System tools" on your left, there should be "Unit manager" or something similar? Click on it, and click the "+" on "USB". Right click on the "Unknown unit" that is the Maxtor drive and "Uninstall" it. When this is done. Unplugg the Maxtor both USB and electricity. Close down the computer. Wait 2 minutes. Replug the Maxtor. Restart the computer. Windows will now create a new connection to the mass storage unit. Worked for me. Good luck.

You can check if your external hard drive is detected by the BIOS during bootup. You can also check this by Right click on taskbar > properties > startmenu > customize > advanced > scroll down completely and select system administration tools "Display on the all programs menu" > ok. Click on start > all programs > administrative tools > computer management > double click on storage. click on disk management(local) here you should see your lacie. If you dont then the drive is probably not detected. If you see, you can just partition it from here and it will appear in your my computer.
