It has comfort plus control; electronic not air. One night it started running on its own without water. Subsequently it will not start the pump motto. However the pump does run fine and doesn't leak if plugged directly in, bypassing the control module black box, BY 17000. I am capable of replacing either the comfort plus switch or the BY 17000; but don't know which to buy. There is also a black box attached to the motor. I presume the air bubble pump? Could it cause the water pump to not run? It is very difficult to get to. Fred

The problem you are experiencing is most likely to be caused by the control box.
If you plug the motor in and it is working, I would replace the control box first.
That is where you would start first. The button on the top of the tub does not go bad very often is this situation.

Actually you can ground them to the copper pipe...any piece of metal material that comes in contact with the earth...hence the word ground....so water supply line or if you ran conduit..and a receptacle box (metal...) you could ground it to that....'
I hope this helps...good luck...thanks for rating my effort...the Fang.

If it is a air button that pushes in and comes back up, there is a good chance that the switch (which is mounted on the pump/motor) is bad. If the switch is a touch button on a key pad, the problem is in the control box for the pump/motor.

Sounds like a bad heating element. This is located in a stainless steel tube under or around the main control box behind the cover around the tub. It is not hard to replace but should be done by a pro. The part is avaliable online.

I had this same problem. I looked at the motor, and on one end (the end opposite where the water comes out) there is a hole in the middle. In that hole is a regular screw tip, which can be used to turn the motor. I filled the tub, inserted a slotted regular screwdriver and turned it about 8 times clockwise, then 8 times counterclockwise. You should see the whole motor turn. Doing this loosened it up, and then it started.
Once it started, all kinds or residue came out, which was probably why it had stopped working. I hadn't used it for a while.
After getting it running I'm going to run some cleaning solution through it, and make sure I run it more often to prevent this in the future.
