If the feed wire has voltage and the ground wire also shows voltage then the ground wire is not grounded. Clean the ground connections.

You could do that but it would not be up to the electrical code requirements. Take the old one out and remove the wire nuts and put the new one in. There should be a ground wire stuffed in the box somewhere. Unless the house is really old. You connect the ground wire to the bare ones in the box.

All 3 switches should be grounded, plus one box should have a ground wire to the box ground screw, all ground wires into the 3 gang should be connected together, run a 4th to the metal box and one to each switch ground.

The ground should be a green insulated wire from one of the screws on the fixture then attached to the bare ground wire with a wire nut.

Three way Switch installation; One cable has two wires plus a bare copper grounding wire, The other cable has three wires plus a ground.
1. Connect the black wire from the two-wire cable to the dark common screw terminal. 2. Connect the red and black wires from the three-wire cable to the traveler screw terminals. 3. Join the white neutral wires together with a wire connector and pigtail the grounding wires to the grounded metal box. 4. When the switch lies at the end of the circuit one cable enters the box. 5. The cable has a black wire, red wire, and white wire, plus a bare copper grounding wire. 6. Connect the black wire to the dark common screw terminal. 7. Connect the white and red wires to the two traveler screw terminals and the bare copper grounding wire to the grounded metal box.

Generally if there is no ground wire, then grounding is not possible without running new wire to box.

Sometimes, the ground wire is cut back so wire appears to have no ground wire. Then if wire can be pulled out further, the ground wire can be discovered.
Sometimes a nearby outlet or switch box will have ground wire that can be brought to box with no ground.

As general rule with 120Volt outlet, the neutral wire is bonded back to same busbar as ground wire, and then both ground outdoors to copper ground rod.

Generally other light household appliances such as lamp, or tv, or electric drill have polarized plug with no ground prong, and are double-insulated and there is little risk or need for a grounded plug.

an alternator has a power out wire a smaller power in wire to excite the field, a ground wire for the field and a large ground wire. Most ground wires are brown. And most power wires are red. You check check the wire for ground and power with and ohm/volt meter. Put the voltmeter on volts and connect the black wire from the meter to ground and the red to the wire, turn on the key and if you have volts it is a power wire. If no volts the turn the key off, select ohms and attach the black meter wire to ground (such as the frame or any metal) then attach the red wire to your blue/white wire if you show 0 ohms or low ohms then it is a ground.

Hi there, If you can give me a little more information, I'd appreciate it. However, I'm going to give it my best shot to see if I can answer what I believe you're looking for. If you're talking about the outlet (receptacle) that you're plugging your appliance into, then the ground (green) wire, or screw on the bottom of the outlet is where you want to connect your third (ground) wire to. If you just have two wires coming off your outlet (receptacle) and can't find the third wire. Then you'd ground or connect a wire to the inside of the box, and then tie with the ground (green) wire coming from the green ground screw on the outlet (receptacle). The problem with house wiring is, a majority of your older houses outlets aren't grounded. If you have a 3-prong outlet, then maybe yours is. But sometimes, people just change these out for convenience purposes. And lastly, if you're talking about the grounded wire in your appliance - look for a green (ground) screw, otherwise you want to connect this to (or around) a metal screw on the inner frame. A majority of your old appliances were never grounded. So bottom line is; your appliance should work with, or without your ground wire. It would be preferable if it was grounded. you need a 2 wire with ground. Some older homes were wire with just a 2 wire. you can take a wire from the nuetral and connect it to the ground screw to trick testers into thinking it is grounded properly, but i would not.

Burnt ground wire can be caused by loose ground fitting (not screwed in tight to the frame or body). Ground wire too small or ground wire connected to an anti-theft alarm system which use small wire, 10 gauge wire should be used on fuel pump ground.
If you have a lot of miles on your car, use a 5-40 synthetic oil, this will help oil comsumption.
