My Bose stereo works fine (Double-DIN NB Bose Audio System (4H60) ). The LCD panel doesn't work. I have to press down hard on the panel to be able to read the time, the station number, etc. Is it possible to repair/replace just the LCD panel without having to buy a new stereo unit?
I have the same problem... and it hasn't anything to do with the orange backligh.. it's the lcd segments themselves that have slowly started disappearing.... pressing hard on the middle of the top edge or the top left corner usually brings the numbers back for a while...
i think this is a loose connection / contact corrosion issue that seems to be common to 2002 miatas (i've seen at least 3 that have the same issue with nearly the same milage ~20k-40k)
This is a very common problem with the Bose head unit, BUT IT LIKELY CAN BE FIXED!
The issue is the solder joints on the rear of the front panel. Contact with the LCD from the front (such as while slipping off the shifter when attempting to shift into 1st/3rd/5th aggressively) has a tendency to break the solder connections on the back side of the board.
Resoldering the broken connections is relatively simple for the steady of hand and usually fixes this problem, but I recommend also soldering the twisted metal retaining tabs for the LCD directly to the pads on the circuit board as well, as that will greatly reduce any deflection of the display when contacted from the front, taking stress off of the actual electrical connections and hopefully preventing it from happening again.
Go to miata.net and search for "Bose Radio Display Panel Not Working" for a more information.
It is likely that the tiny light globes used to illuminate the LCD screen have gone.
Did the screen gradually get darker or did it all go at once?
Try shining a torch at an angle on the screen to see if the information is still there.
