Can i connect a dvd player on it

only if your dvd player uses dsub or dvi connections. so prob not.
(ive never seen it) dsub and dvi are comouter connections.

youll need a dvd player and monitor with the same ports.

hdmi or svideo are you most likely options (depending on what port the dvd player has. it may only use RCA which is rare on computer stuff)

I have tried to hook up the monitor to the dvd player and all I get is grey and red on the screen

Most of the time its one of two things the cable needs to be replaced if you can plug into computer and it works that rules this out Second the connector on the dvd is bad this is the most occuring problem. I would try someone else's dvd player and see if it works.

Can i connect a dvd player to a dell e173fpf monitor with a scart to vga adaptor/cable?

You can with an RCA to VGA converter device (Amazon has it for $45 S&H), the AV cables of your DVD player and a pair of amplified speakers. Connect the yellow RCA video cable to this device then your monitor's VGA cable to the device. Also plug in the red & white RCA audio cable to both the device and to your DVD player. Finally connect your speakers to the DVD player ad your'e all set!

Dvd

Most laptop computers only include an output to connect an external monitor, not inputs for external sources, so the simple answer is no. If you want to be able to play DVD's on a laptop that doesn't have a DVD drive, then you can get an external USB drive and plug that in.

Hope this helps.

Input video to nec 1740cx-bk lcd monitor

If you are trying to use a computer monitor to watch a DVD, you probably won't have much success unless your monitor accepts the RCA plug. I have found the VGA adapters to RCA plugs will not work in this manner.

Component conecters

alright...those are Component Connectors...your DVD, and VHS will not work with that Monitor at all.

The Best and Cheapest Option...is to Buy a "Modern" DVD Player...which almost every single one Has Component Connectors.

On your Current DVD, VHS...ECT. The Red and White is Audio respectively, and the Yellow is the Video.

On a Component However the Red, Blue, and green...are all Video. You will need to use your "Current" Red and White Audio Jacks from your DVD and VHS Players on your New Monitor, and New DVD Player.

As Far as VHS is concerned...if you Buy a DVD/VHS Combo...you should have a S-Video Jack on Both the Monitor, and the DVD/VHS Player...Buy a S-Video Plug.

With that you will be able to watch both DVD's, and VHS Tapes without issue
