You may need to purchase a Gathering Attachment
Part No. 200 217 101

BUT be sure it is suitable for your model first
(I am unsure which one you have)

Thread tensions are set at manufacture to all = 3 for standard work, your manual is generally helpful for many answers.

The "Janome Overlocker Sewing Guide" is a very detailed publication and has this to say about Gathering without any additional attachment.

I have a Finesse new home 23 4 overlocker. How do I start the threading please.

A manual would be helpful:

Instruction Manual Janome Newhome 234

Even if you are unable to find a manual for your particular model, similar models usually thread the same or similarly. Just be sure to ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot when threading the machine so the thread will seat in the tension disks.

What are the tension settings for a janome ml 304 over locker?

Tension settings on an overlock machine vary by the stitch you are trying to accomplish. You can usually fine the correct settings in your manual. A good trick to setting tension is to start with 4 different thread colors so that you can see what thread requires adjustment.

Serger thread breaks

1. Is the serger threaded correctly?

2. Is the needles inserted correctly?

3. Is one of the needles bent or damaged?

4. Is the tension adjusted too tightly?

5. Is the tension adjusted to accommodate thickness of thread being used?

6. Are you using inferior quality thread?

7. Is the thread feeding of the cone/spool freely?

8. Is the needle size correct for the type of fabric being used?

9. Are the needles being used the correct one for the serger?

Adjusting tension on overlocker

overlockers and sergers are annoying in that every time you change materials and threads they must be re-tensioned.

Get a scrap piece of material. Thread your machine correctly according to the instructions in your manual. If no manual most sergers are threaded, upper looper, lower looper then needles from right to left. Make sure you thread with the presser foot UP.

You want to balance the stitches Begin by adjusting the looper dials, you want them to meet right at the cut edge. Then adjust your needles. Keep doing test seams until you have them balanced. If you are a novice... try threading with each thread point having it's own color. That will help you identify which thread is giving you fits.

Have fun.

Can you please tell me how to set up my Janome 304D overlocker to roll hem?

try this solution
http://www.fixya.com/support/t9307094-cannot_get_tension_right_also_trying

not exactly your serger model but technique will be very similar for rolled hem.

You need to set up a three thread overlock with the right hand needle, (take left needle out), and change the thread finger in the throat. Sometimes a switch to do this and sometimes it is a little piece on the foot that you change with a screwdriver.

Also, this solution http://www.fixya.com/support/t9280656-thread_janome_204d_serger is basic threading on 204D, it should be very similar to your model.

I have looked for a free download instruction manual for your machine without success. But you should be able to buy one from Janome or another of the online sewing sites like www.sewusa.com or www.sewingpartsonline.com.

]ve a manual you can somtimes find them on the Janome websit

Janome 134D Overlocker

Set you differential at 1.0 and your loopers at about 3-4 the needle thread tensions are usually around 5 to 6.
I would also suggest that you place four different color threads on machine to make it easier to adjust all. Now if you are using only 3 threads the same applies.
 Also------patience.
