Hi there. Firstly if it's firing but dying it could mean that the air filter is blocked with debris. Try and run it without. If it still dont run make sure the air holes in the fuel cap aren't blocked. If it still wont run then it may be the gaskets on the carb. This is a proffesional job and will need to be done by a service engineer.

if its a briggs and stratton engine with the plastic carb fixed to top of the fuel tank then you will need to replace the diaphragm and blow out the fuel pick up pipe

Does it die when you attempt to engage the cutting deck? If so the you might have a clogged fuel filter, bad gas, dirty air filter, bad spark plug.
Or the mower engage switch may be faulty. They are located in different places on different mowers. But should be attached somewhere along the main pivot of the engage lever. Let me know if you need more assistance. Good Luck!!

There are a few things you may want to try. One, the float in the carb may be stuck. Try putting a small amount of gas directly into the carb, this may free the float. Two, try replacing the fuel filter, it may be that some fuel is getting to the engine but not enough. Three check the air filter, same as with fuel the engine may be getting some air but not enough to continue to run. Hope this helps.

Download this service manual above it isn't exactly the same, but follow the troubleshooting procedures and it will help you find and fix your problem

Try cleaning your gas cap vent. It sounds like it may be partially plugged. If it is plugged, the engine will eventually stall.

Try cleaning out the fuel tank and replacing the fuel filter. What happens is it has enuf gas to run but not enuf to run when it demans more power. You might find earwigs int he tank clogging the fuel hole at the bottom (common problem)
