Running a 1/4" cable has no bearing unless you are trying to run a hundred yards of cable. Check your plugs wiring and connections to the unit. Here is the manual.

You should be able to unplug a mic from the xlr input with the unit on with no problem.
I beleive the problem is that the xlr input jack has one or more legs broken off the board. If you dsassemble the board and resolder the three legs to the board you'll probably fix the problem.

U blew the amp on that channel and now it has to be repaired.

The output section has shorted output transistors. The increased load on the driver section probably smoked a few capacitors and resistors. Until the unit is repaired, you won;t get anything out of it. I would figure on $25-$50 in parts for the repair plus the local labor rate.
