I have just acquired an apple imac g4. When you hit the power button nothing happens, no noises or anything. I've got some idea how to open the thing, but what am I looking to replace? The on switch, power supply or both? Any ideas would be much appreciated

Hello,
The power supply is part of the motherboard in the iMac G4, so it's hard to change it. The repair would certainly cost more than the price of your iMac.
You can try to take off the small battery, and reboot it to see if it changes.
To open the mac lay it down, screen on the table (on a t-shirt). Unscrew the four screws (they wont come out, so just unscrew them. Pull the screws and take off the silver plate. Then you'll have access to the inside.
Good luck

This is a problem that manifests itself on some of these models and also on some of the G4 models before it.I have a G4 here that does it and last week I was working on a machine like yours doing it. The thing is, just be a little patient. Press the power button and hold it, count to 10. it may come on. It may not. Try again and again until suddenly you hear the fan start up, a moment later the **** happens and the mac starts up normally. If you are trying to do it with the back off, just short the 2 copper coloured prongs that line up with the power button with a flat-blade screwdriver. (That's all the button does.) If the worse comes to the worse and you cannot get it to start, don't worry, your pictures are safe on the HD and as you've got the back off, I think it's only 3 screws to remove the HD. Yopu can then connect it to another mac to get at the pictures.

First thing to do is test (and then almost certainly replace) your ten-year-old logic board battery. If the battery is dead, the power button won't function.
The iMac G4 will refuse to turn on if the logic board battery is dead. Since this model Macintosh is now about eight years old, it's quite reasonable to suspect your battery is dead. Battery replacement is a relatively simple task for a certified technician, but unfortunately the battery in this model is not a user-replaceable part.
Well if a new power supply and battery and board reset didnt work you have hit all the stuff it might be other than the board itself.
Best way to retrive your data is get a external enclusure put in the hard drive and plug it into the new Imac.
I have found sometime people have bent or unplugged some ribbon cords in the Imac and they are finicky after that but since yours just happened I am not sure.
Hope this helps. Sorry your Mac isnt playing nice.
The most common problem with imac G4/800's are failing logic-boards. This will cause the mac to not power up at all giving the impression that the PSU is broken.
If however, you are indeed certain that the fault is with the power supply, they are available from many stores online
