I would look for a dusty LED or sensor. They're used to let the printhead to find its position. Once cleaned the head should align properly.

SOURCE: ink cartridges make a slamming sound from left to right and wont print

The encoder strip is most likely the problem. Unplug the power from the printer. Open the front cover and move the cartridge carrier to the center. You should see a white ribbon cable, a thin plastic strip and a black belt with teeth.
The thin plastic strip is the encoder strip. It rides in a sensor on the back of the cartridge carrier that you will not be able to see. Reach in with the first finger of either hand and carefully strum the strip as if playing a guitar.
The strip will need to be lowered slightly and brought towards you slightly. Please be careful not to break the strip or your printer will not function. Once you believe the strip is set correctly, plug the power back and try printing the self test. If it slams to the left again, the strip is not yet set correctly.
If you cannot repair the strip, please let us know so that we can assist you further.

Please Note: Fixing the encoder strip is a delicate procedure. During the troubleshooting, if the strip breaks, you will not be able to use the printer.

Message-P.C cannot communicate with printer

A quick fix for most communication errors can be achieved by resetting the printer and/or rebooting the PC. Simply disconnect the printer from your computer. Reboot your pc. Unplug and re-plug the printer into the power source to reset it. When the printer turns on, reconnect it to your computer. Then try to print again once the computer fully recognizes the USB connection. If that doesn't help, try the steps below: 1. Disconnect the printer from your computer. 2. Re-brick your printer. Pull out the power supply, black box where the power cord is plugged in at the back of the printer, and put it back after 30 seconds. 2. On your computer, go to Control Panel > Printers and Faxes. 3. Delete the Lexmark print object. 4. Reboot your pc. 5. When your pc turns on, reconnect the printer. 6. Wait until your pc fully recognizes the USB connection. To check, go to Control Panel > Printers and Faxes. If you see a new Lexmark print object in the list, then try to print a document again to verify that the problem is fixed. You may also try to update your printer driver by visiting the Lexmark website at http://bit.ly/gKXn7F. Select your operating system, download and execute the file.

Printer will not function. Power light on, fax light on. Won't turn off with buttons. Disconnected power and usb and reconnected, still nothing. Can it be set back to factory specs?

Refer to this article How to Restore the Factory Defaults on the Lexmark X4250/X4270 for instructions on how to reset the printer to its factory settings. If the printer still won't turn off using the power button, unplug the power adapter from the printer. The power adapter is the rectangular black brick behind the printer where the power cord plugs is plugged in. Replug after 30 seconds. That should give enough time for the printer to refresh itself. Thanks.

Computer wont communicate with printer

If you have installed your printer on your PC using an original Lexmark Driver CD that came with your product and you are experiencing problems when printing, you may have installed the Windows XP driver.

Follow these steps to resolve:
Disconnect your USB cable from your printer.
Uninstall all Lexmark printer drivers on your PC.
Download the correct Vista driver for your model.
Install the driver on your PC.
Important Notice -
Do not reconnect the USB cable until the install software prompts the question of how the printer is connected.
go to Lexmark website using this link: http://support.lexmark.com/perl/support/support.cgi enter your product number (X4270) and you will find your driver for Vista. Good luck.

Lexmark x4270

Normal 0 Could have a corrupt driver.
Disconnect the printer or at least be sure it is turned off. I'd do both and when the software install asks you to connect the printer to the USB port, do so and it should again work properly.
Hope this helps. Bud
