Now, here comes even more fun stuff....I decided that it was pointless to keep trying the same key command that wouldn't work again. So, I Went back to the same window and left the same 'Speak selected text......checked as before. But, now I decided to Select the "Change Key" Box to change The Command+E to a different key. The CHANGE KEY Box didn't bring up any new box to type in a new command key. So, I assumed I could just replace the COMMAND+E that was already in the box by backing it out & Type in Command+R to replace that key with my own that I could use to have the highlighted text read. PROBLEM, I was unable to remove the original Command+E, couldn't back it out to delete it and realised it wouldn't allow me to even type a new Replacement Command Key...I could not put anything in that box nor could I delete it. The old key is still not working to read AND later that afternoon When I thought I'd try again, the box that had COMMAND+E in it; NOW had Command+Shift+F or something close to that. I hadn't typed it in and couldn't figure how the Command+E changed and a new replacement was there. AM I MISSING A STEP, ARE THERE ONLY CERTAIN KEYS YOU CAN SELECT FROM, IF SO WHERE DO I FIND THEM? Bottom line is that I've only had this MacBook Air Notebook for two days but am ready to throw it out a window. Without the text to speech working, the things I want to use this Mac for can't be done unless I get someone to PLEASE Share the EXACT STEPS I need to follow to get this text to speech to start reading by using a Command+R key. PLEASE HELP...I HAVE A DEADLINE TO HAND THE LAPTOP OFF TO SOMEONE WHO WON't be able to use it without the text to speech functionality! I need some step by step directions because I don't know what more to try. Can anyone PLEASE HELP RESOLVE THIS? I am definitely missing a step or something. I am in real trouble if I can't hand this MacBook Air over to a Superior in two days. Scared & Confused, need someone to ride up on a white horse and save me,
okay going to have a bash at solving this but it's a little hard based on your description. I'm guessing this has Mavricks operating system installed.
So based on what you have described you have already found this option and set the change key to "command" + "e"
Try rebooting then going to the text to speech option and attempt to set the key combination you want it to be. If this fails to change then try resetting the P-ram which should set it back to the default.

I'm afraid that with them trying to make it as thin as possible that you may start seeing this problem all around. Not only is it a wireless computer but they should also state, "Be gentle". Haha

all macbooks have a security that will not let you switch the harddrive from one the the other. Apple will need to reset the computer at an Apple store!!! His drive is DEAD!!!

Thank you Valleychick for your support request. I will start by telling you that I am a BIG FAN of Mac computers . . . however, as much as I admire their insanely great strides in innovation by translating artisitic design, functionality, and technology beautifully into a personal computing device, I have been disappoionted how much reliability and overall quality seems to be sacrificed.
The best thing you can do with your problem is first, check out this link: http://blogs.eweek.com/applewatch/content/macbook/is_light_macbook_air_defect_heavy.html
Next, gather your receipts, packaging and all the cords, manuals, disks that came with yourt air book and return it ASAP to the store or reseller you purchased in order to exchange. What you describe is all too common with your model. You may want to print the blog from the link above as well and ask to make verify visually the screen quality of the screen before you take another defective laptop all the way back home.About $85.00 per hour, plus parts is what you will end up paying for labor for Mac tech to repair your AirBook if this problem or others pop up after the warranty expires, so don't be afraid to thoroughly have your exchange computer tested before you take it home. Wish I could FIX-YA better, but this is truly your best recourse. Please send us your feedback if this helped and let me know how your experience with returning the computer went.

If you have your Mac OS X Install disc, insert it into the drive.
Restart the computer and hold down "C" while booting.
Choose your language.
Select "Disk Utility" from the "Utilities" in the menu bar.
Select your Macbook's hard drive in the left sidebar.
Click the "First Aid" tab thats along the top of the viewer window.
Click "Verify Disk" (not verify disk permissions)
If this shows errors click "Repair Disk"
Once completed close the Disk Utility window.
Restart the computer.
If this fails to fix it as well then your next option would most likely be recovering your files from the macbook either by booting into target disk mode (hold down T at startup) and transferring them via a firewire cable, or removing the hard drive and hooking it up to another Mac to get the files. Then do a clean install of Mac OS X using your installation discs.
