Burning rubber smell when vacuum running

First of all, thank you very much for choosing FIXYA today for your online technical support needs.

Most times that burning rubber smell is the result of a worn out rubber drive belt. This belt is used to drive the rotating beater brush in the head of your vacuum. When the belt gets old and loose, the drive pulley starts to spin in place and heats up the belt instead of turning it properly.

To fix this issue, just unplug your vacuum, then disassemble the bottom head in order to access the beater brush drive belt. Remove the old belt, then replace with a new one, and then reassemble it. The old belt will probably have a part number on it so you know which type to buy, or you can just look up your vacuum model number online to find the correct replacement part for it.

Since you did not provide your vacuum's exact model number, here is a link to a short video which demonstrates the basic belt replacement procedure for a generic vacuum cleaner:

To view the video instructions just use your mouse to click on the link, which is the underlined and blue highlighted text just above.

This will open a new web browser page automatically for you and allow you to view the information at the website indicated.

I truly hope that was helpful to you.

Good luck and take care.

I have a Eureka Power Plus vacuum, model 4702, type A. To start off, it never really had great suction. Marginal at best. Then today I was vacuuming and smelled something burning and turned off the...

If it is the motor it may smell electrical and the motor is likely shot. It's very possible it needs a new belt. Your model has a stretch belt and they should be replaced at least every six months (even if it's never been used) because belts need to be stretched so far to be installed they will lose elasticity and slip on the shaft which can cause the belt to melt.

Brush will not turn

The vacuum needs a new belt. Check the brush roller, if it turns easily without resitance, it needs a new belt. Get your model number off the back of the machine. It's on a sticker near the floor with UL logo on it. Go to Sears and gets some belts.

I'm not sure if it needs a good cleaning or a new belt. I called the vac place & they want $80 for cleaning it...more if it needs parts of course.

Try calling someone else a tune up should be about $40-45. Most likely it is the belt though. The belt should be about $6 or 7 bucks.

Needs new belt

you should be able to buy it at any walmart store. they sell the belts separately by two's. they usually range about three dollars for two. Pay special attention to the make and model and the belt type that is required. Thank You .
Please indicate if this helped at all..much appreciated

Hoover Wind Tunnel V-Belt no longer turns brush

that is the correct belt what you dont see is a tension pulley that when the handle is released pushes on top of that belt giving it the tension it needs. try replacing the other belt, even if it isnt broken it could easily be stretched out ( all belts of that type should be replaced every year - even if you didnt use the machine at all ). if that doesnt work that tension pulley could be damaged you would need to take the bottom of the machine apart to fix that.

I have a Broan Nutone central vacuum. The power head seems to stall unless you lift up on the handle. I think I may need to change the belt but cannot find a place to purchase one to see if this is the...

If the power head is spinning when you lift up the handle then the head could be blocked with dirt. You may need to undo the floor head to see if the entire brush roll is clear as well as the main dirt channel/turbine wheel. Ensure that everything is clear before assuming it may be the belt that needs to be replaced.
You may well have to call or contact the main company who makes Broan Nutone models for them to send out / query the power head problem.
