Generally for LCD calculators there is no adjustment of the screen that you can do.
If it's dim and battery powered, try replacing the batteries. If it's solar powered, try keeping it in strong light
Most likely the LCD inverter has gone bad. This is the part that provides power to the back-light of the display. In order to replace it, you'll have to get the part number of the LCD. Be aware, they used different LCD in the same size display. It will require removing the bezel and removing the screws that hold the LCD in place so you can get to the back to read the part number of the LCD. The inverter shouldn't cost that much, but if you have a shop do the repair, you're looking at $125-$175. good luck.

ltaufer, My best guess is monitor has partial shutdown of the internal "switch-mode-power-supply"/"CCFL inverter supply that lights-up the fluorescent lamps that provide WHITE LIGHT so you can see all the pretty colors on the LCD glass panel. Your monitor falls into the BLACK screen failure type. (no backlight) Full shutdown mode=BLACK and BLANK. Read more of my FIXYA profile to discover all the options you have to get it repaired and not ripped-off. Your CCFL backlit LCD monitor no different than any other brand of LCD in it's basic design and operational principals. Read, read, read!!! You must find out two things first. Not just WHAT failed, but also WHY it failed. Follow the links in my profile to other web sites!! Livio, This is my response #200 on fixya dealing mostly (98 percent) with BLACK screen problems. If you get the boot image on your screen then you screen is working correctly unless there's something that you not explaining. You can try an ext. monitor if you think it is something related to your LCD screen not woring during boot up. If the ext monitor not showing your laptop to boot then you have problem with your OS and may need to get it repaired or restored.
Well in monitor you can do one thing - disconnect the monitor cable*(VGA Cable) from the tower and chk still if u have the same faint screen that means monitor gone bad if not than uninstall the Grapics Driver and shut down computer... if u have internet than restart and go to device manager ( Run - devmgmt.msc) under display adapter right click on grapics name and update driver.
Only by fitting brighter backlight, but this is normally not that easy, depending on the size. Some backlights are part of the LCD assembly, on smaller units they are sometimes side mounted. The contrast on an LCD is usually adjustable - there may be a small potentiometer on it that will adjust the contrast, that may improve matters.
