Sceptre X30SV LCD display goes black with sound... Inverter? and other parts...

Hello...

I have a Sceptre X30SX LCD in which the display goes black with sound.  From everything that I have read, the problem is with the power inverter PCB.

I have removed the back of the LCD out of curiosity and have some questions.  Please see attached image.  What are the main components of a LCD television?  Which is the power inverter pcb?  What are the other boards?

Thanks...

Hello... I wanted to let everyone know that I was able to find a replacement main board online that I took a chance with. They claimed the board was working.

I have since replaced the main board and the power block and the same problem persists.

I am assuming the problem is the inverter board with I believe is the board on the right in the pic.

Hello... I fixed this LCD by replacing the inverter with a genuine Darfon 48.v1448.001 /F that I found online @ Electronica in Denver, CO - 303-322-3037. This was not a reproduction and the price was $159. I have a few parts for this LCD if anyone is interested. MCA

I have the same problem with another no-name TV branded "Intertronic". It appears as though the same Darfon # 48.V1448.001 Inverter board is inside the unit and I'm thinking it's the culprit of the flash blue then no backlight issue. Did your inverter board replacement fix the problem? Any component testing advice?

Same song different verse. My Sceptre X30SV-Naga III has lost it's picture, although the sound is audible. The customer service person at Sceptre also told me to send back the TV and for $250 they would replace the power inverter. If everyone's having the same problem, wouldn't this be grounds for a product recall?

  • kimkat1231 Sep 13, 2008

I just had the same problem. It happened yesterday. Sound without picture. It keeps clicking off.

  • mhulse Oct 03, 2008

Yes, this is grounds for a recall. I have the sound with no backlight issue on my X30SV-NagaIII, also. A year ago, I replaced the power adpter on the thing when it was only 14 months old! Now this inverter situation. If someone knows how to get a class action lawsuit going on this, I am willing to be a participant.

My set is 3 years old and I have the same problem. It goes black right after a small flash of blue.I guess I'll see if I can get the invertor bd. You would expect it to last longer than that.

  • h_grass Oct 20, 2008

Same Problem here, I've had the moniter for 3 yrs as well, same blue light and then nothing. Recall?

  • Anonymous Nov 11, 2008

Same problem. A little over 3 yrs old. Sometimes unplugging the system and letting it sit for about 20 minutes and then I am good for another day. I cannot get the MENU to display. I do get the blue screen for less than a second; it shows the 1) input selected 2) OFF and 3) ????. It appears there is a problem with their inverter and probably some other parts on the motherboard. I have a call in to Sceptre support, but am not enthusiastic about their possible solutions. Why pay for another inverter when I can get a bigger brand new "OTHER MANUFACTURER; ie. VIZIO or SANYO" model for a little more than $450 at a place such as Costco or Walmart.

I have the same problem, sound no picture.

I agree there should be a recall on this product.

I have the same issue with a 32 inch Sceptre model. Was it hard to replace?

I have the same problem... when I turn the TV on, the screen goes blue for a second and then black but the ausio stays on. I really like this TV and I'd love to find a way to rapair it instead of just tossing it. Does anyone have a solution for that? (preferrably cheap?!)

I too have the same problem...Searched and waited long time for parts. I have replaced everything and the thing still flashes and goes blank but has sound. Not worth anymore stress. My neighbor is an electrical engineer who I used to think can fix anything. He too is baffled. My fix suggestion... Getting a new LCD (not a Sceptre) tonight...with an extended warranty...Sceptre (and their tech's) no help if you don't have a warranty. I learned my lesson!

The defective inverter will cause the following symptoms:
* No Picture on screen but LCD TV still has Sound.
* Screen Flash on and Off between 1/2 to a few seconds, but power indicate light stays on and TV still has sound

P.S. - I have a brand New OEM Darfon v144.001 inverter for sale $125 + shipping.

I had the same problem. SOLUTION #3 worked. I almost messed up, as I undid the frame base by mistake and the set monitor over; brain fart.

First remove the power cord from the monitor. (Unplug it at the base ). I recommend that you disconnect all other adapters. Lay the monitor down, if possible.

All you need to do is to undo the cover ( 4 screws ) above the power connector. The power supply will slide out when the cover is removed. Remove the power box, it simply sits in this area. There is a connector cable at the top that goes into the back of the monitor and it inserts into a connector ( they may disconnect when you remove the cover over the power converter box). Simply stick your fingers into the area to the middle of the display and pull the connector into the power box area. Unplug the power inverter from the connnector. Wait a minute and reconnect the power box cable at the top of it to the connector. Put the connector and cable into the area you pulled it from. Put the cover back on over the inverter box. Plug it in and test that the MENU will display on the monitor. Put the monitor back where you want it and all should work. It did for me.

I had the same problem, no picture, only audio! I wanted to test the VGA input since it does not require tuner. As soon as I hooked up the laptop, the picture from the all input started working! Problem gone, it keeps working!

I had the same problem with an Intertronic brand TV.  This had the same inverter board as the Sceptre.  I unassembled the TV to inspect, without proper diagnostic equipment I couldn't determine 100%, but still thought it was the inverter board.  To be sure I took it to a TV repair shop that had only a $40 diagnostic fee (deductable from repair costs if they end up doing the work).  The test came back positive for the inverter board, their quote was $290; I said no way, I'll do it myself.  The shop owner asked me how much I thought it should cost, I said $160 (because I know the board costs $130-150, and figured the technician had already taken the TV apart to inspect so it shouldn't take much more work to put a new board in).  We ended up agreeing on $190, which I found to be a deal cause they warranteed their work.  TV now works great.  I recommend you guys try a similar route if you are unsure of what is broken.  Even if I didn't get the work done there, $40 is not too much to spend for a proper diagnosis.

Same problem here. Sound with no picture. Cannot switch between sources, a bit of blue then nothing. Unplugged power source and adapter, and replaced it, still same problem.

Thanks Sceptre, but your 3 year old product sucks!

I had the identical problem and found one solution from a fellow down under...he suggested a possible grounding issue in the cable connection. Voila! sure enough, I disconnected the cable, grounded it to myself and reinstalled the cable. The picture came right back. Unbelievable and I hope it works for a long time.

Me again, so far replaced all capicitors on the inverter board, replaced the power brick (can't open it, the manufacturer hammered ball bearings in the torx holes so you can't open it, stupid trick, just makes you not want to buy anything from them). Still the same problem. I'm going to replace all the capacitors near the power connector next, waiting on parts, keep you posted.

BTW, the lower board that is hidden under the shield is the circuitry for the LCD panel. Not for the backlighting, so this should not be a problem.

After 2-1/2 years with no problems on this exact same set, I'm now having the identical issue. Sound of video source, but no picture...except for the initial flash. Sometimes after a complete power off & unplug I get about 10 seconds of video signal (DVI) but then it goes blank too.

Any fix would be much welcome!

The board on the right is the inverter board, replacement for that is about $200. I don't know what the board on the bottom is yet, I haven't been able to remove the shield. I have tested the output on the power brick ($64 on ebay) and it is delivering 24V, and I've replaced all the capacitors on the inverter board but I still have the same problem (screen flashes blue with the input selection message at the top left, then goes black, but audio still works). I'm going to open up the TV again today and try to get that shield off so that I can see how much circuitry is between the brick and the inputs on the inverter board.

My sceptre won't show my pc screen, it keeps going to black screen...when I push source button my pc flashes on screen but then goes black...

I believe you are trying to display too high of resolution to this screen.
Try using a lower resolution. If you had 1024x768 then try 800 x 600.

Screen is black except briefly blue upon power on or putting source on "VGA"

Your backlights power inverter board is what causes this prob. It is a Darfon V144-001.

LCD Turns off or screen goes blue

I had the same problem with mine. I replaced the power supply and the problem was solved. That was about two months ago. Now I have the problem with a very brief blue screen, then going black with the sound still working. From what I have been able to find out it appears now that I have a bad power inverter. I will be replacing that next.

Does anyone have a problem with the screen looking cloudy? When my TV was working, I could see areas that looked like faint black clouds across the screen.

X30SV-NAGA III

So here is the scoop, sceptre told me to fill out an RMA request, fax it in with CC# and it would cost 250.00 as long as it was not the display. Upon approval of the RMA they asked for an additional 80.00 return shipping fee to be added on to the 250.00. Plus it would cost me 35.00 to ship it from Missouri to City of Industry, CA. So as you can tell it would cost me 365.00 just to send it.

Screen goes blank after a second

This is an easy fix! You have a bad "power inverter chipset" To fix this issue you will have to search google for a power inverter for this particular model of lcd. It's basically just the chip that the power cable plugs into on the lcd. More than likely it's going to be cheaper for you just to buy another t.v... Sorry. I know these T.Vs like the back of my hand. I've seen this issue with hundreds of LCDs because I work for a company that fixes them. FYI - It is not your backlight because if that is broken the monitor would not even flash. It is not your VGA because if that was busted you would not see any video.
