I don't understand this term: "choose either dvd or usb menu". Do you mean instead ""choose either dvd or cd menu? I've used many usb hard drives and I've never seen such a "menu".

Try to check the jumper settings of your DVD/CD ROM if it is properly assigned as Master or Slave.
Afterwards, also check the cable connecting the DVD/CD ROM to the motherboard.
Finally, restart your PC and check the BIOS Setup if it can already detect your DVD/CD ROM.

I have an LG GP08NU6B Portable DVD Drive. Although I can see Videos on the Laptop, when connected, I am unable to get any Audio. Would Appreciate if you would assist in this matter. Tks & Brgds BJ.

If you have a Windows disk, put it in the CD and see if you can boot from that. You didn't say what operating system you have, but you should be able to boot from a CD/DVD if the system is working properly.
Once you boot it, you'll need to get to the command prompt (varies according to your operating system) and see if you can see drive C:
You should also, on startup, press the key that puts you into setup (normally F2). You can then look at the system devices and see if it reports that there is a hard drive. If it fails the tests, above, then your hard drive is probably bad.

When checking this, I always see if I can get to the drive by booting from a CD/DVD first.

This is the first symptom of a DVD/CD drive going bad. Usually the DVD or the CD laser goes first making it only work with one or the other. Eventually the DVD will go to but you might get it to last. You can either take it into an Authorize Service Provider or look for third party drives on the internet. Expect to pay about $100 if you go to an ASP but you could find one online and install it yourself for about $50. There is only one screw holding it in and an easy bracket to switchover to the new drive. The faceplate won't line up nicely like the original most likely if you go third party. Of course if your under warranty still then call 1-800-457-7777 or look up your closest "Authorize Service Provider" at support.toshiba.com and get it fixed before your warranty expires.

Yes, your burner is toast. Go order you a new one, open this puppy up, and install it. No need to worry about voiding the warranty, cause your warranty has long expired on this old beast. If your hands are unsteady or your tech skills a bit rusty, then pay someone to do it.

CD and DVD drives are all made to fit inside a standard PC drive bay.
