To view the captions, all you have to do is turn on the decoder by following these simple steps:

  1. Access your TV menu screen using your remote or by pressing a button on the face of the TV.
  2. Select the closed captions heading. Several different caption options may appear.
  3. Select the "CC1" option.
  4. Exit the menu.
Closed captions should appear within approximately one minute of adjusting this setting. If they do not, review this portion of your television's operating manual or contact the manufacturer of the television set.

Public Television stations do not transmit Closed captioning

SOURCE: HDMI Cable problem

Well, first you might want to try another hdmi connection behind your TV.If it appears to have the same message, you need to check your TV setup and be sure the HDMI video is active.
Secondly,go with the recommendation of the set top box.You will use component video cable to connect from your set top box component video output(Y PR PB) to your TV (Y PR PB) and see if that actually work.If so,just use the cable box for the time being and call your cable company for another cable box to replace this one!

HD worked with HDMI cables on HD Cable Box & ROKU3. Now only get SD transmission. Is it worth repairing?

On a 32' tv the repair probably wouldn't be worth it after labor costs. They're cheaper to replace with a new one and less of a hassle.

If by regular cables you are talking about the standard red/yellow/white composite cables, then, yes, it will affect HD as composite cannot send an HD signal. Only HDMI and component (red/blue/green video only) cables.

Change to HDMI and let us know if it works for you.

In most cases you will not be able to see a great difference between HDMI and Component connections. As far as not seeing a difference between HD and SD signals from your cable box, go into the settings of it and see what resolution it is putting out. If you have a Motorola cable box, with it off and the TV on press the menu button and the setup screen will appear. That will tell you the output resolution as well as what the 4:3 override is set to. Please take a few moments to rate my answer. Thanks....

As I see it this TV has no optical digital audio input. The connection on the rear of the set is "Digital Audio Out (Optical)", not in. I think you need to run a HDMI cable from the cable box to the TV to get digital audio.

Sound only works with HD, not SD

Check the setup menus of the Insignia TV, as most sets have an advanced setting hidden deep in the setup menu to use the HDMI cable for sound - OR- use component RCA inputs for sound. My Philips TV has this.

It's odd that this only shows up for SD content...I would see if there is a firmware update available for that from the manufacturer. The one thing that you see lots of firmware fixes for are HDMI issues.

TV Sound

First lets determine where the sound is missing. What are you using for sound. RCA jacks? HDMI cable? If you are using the HDMI cable, please make sure the correct sound is selected in the Cable box. In New York Cable Box, The HDMI sound has to be selected in order to get sound using the HDMI cable. Hoping that all other settings are ok, You may need a new signal board. Part Number BN94-00629R. Average Cost $176.14
