Are you speaking of the outside fan or inside? compressor should be a little warm but not boiling hot. the unit could be low on freon. if low it will run a while but the compressor will overheat and shut off leaving the fan running by itself ouside. if nothing outside is running check power. if you have power check the contacted outside to make sure it's pulled in. contacters are bad about going out on goodman untis. Also ants can get under contacts.

The compressor should feel warm while running. If you find the fan running and not the compressor, feel the compressor and see if it is hot, it may burn you. If it is, it is locked up and needs to be replaced. I believe those units have only one contactor meaning both the fan and compressor are energized at the same time. If the fan is running without the compressor, the compressor is probably bad. You need to make sure filters are changed on a regular basis and the indoor coil is clean. You need to have the technician (after compressor replacement) do a thorough job checking the pressures and temps of the refrigerant after it has run for at least 30 mins. If the compressor died that quick there is something wrong in your system causing it to go out. Good luck.

I have Goodman HVAC system and it stopped cooling. The fan motor is running and is throwing out hot air. I called a tech and he says the compressor is weak and freon is leaking in coil upstairs.

compressors dont go weak either valves are failing -or unit motor failing --and if have leak will need fixing and depending on where and why leaking not cheap --get 2nd opinion

Ac compressor will not start

Hello, sounds like a faulty capacitor. Check the capacitor to see if it is puffed up at the terminals. It will be located inside the outside unit and looks like like a can that is oval or round.

Goodman central air conditioner not blowing normally

It sounds like the compressor is not coming on in the outside unit. If it worked fine and was cooling before, then your compressor probably over-heated and tripped the internal overload switch which causes it to stay off while everything else is working. The most common cause of your compressor over heating is an incorrect refrigerant charge, though it could be a few other things like a restriction in the copper line set. You will be able to hear the fan motor and the compressor kick on if you listen close while the system first turns on. If the compressor is over-heated, then after it cools to a save temperature, it will come on again, but only till it over-heats again. I would have the charge checked on the system, but remember that if the compressor is over-heated when the technician gets there, there is nothing he can do until it cools down and time is money! It's best to not run it until the problem gets figured out. Hope this helps and points you in the right direction. Good luck!

yes, but I would try a "hard-start" kit before replacing the compressor itself

3 ton condensor and 2.5 air handler

I hate to use rules of thumb but 500sqft per ton depending on your windows and insulation. you are probably ok with a 2.5 ton however it will not work with a 3 ton outdoor unit as you have figured out. depending on how long that ac has been in you may want to replace it with a 2.5 ton due to the damage to the compressor valves because of the mis match. or if the indoor is newer and the original system may have been a 3 ton then i would replace the A/H. and be prepared to replace the outdoor if the valves are to far gone. If the trane is a new high effiency 2 and the goodman is just a 10 SEER you may be able to have a txv installed on the trane unit and a kickstart device outside. but only if its a high effiency but their again if the A/C fails you couldnt have a high effiency 3 ton you would have to drop down to 2.5,

Goodman 3 ton outside unit fan not blowing

Motor, wiring and/or capacitor. If the sticker on the side of the motor isn't burned off you can get the motor info off that. Model numbers from the motor do little for locating the motor but my help. Best thing to do is get the AC motor specs and look up online (cheapest) or go to a motor shop. The specs you need would be as follows.
Horsepower-Such as 1/4 or 1/3
Voltage-Most likely 240/1 (240vac single phase)
Rotation-CW/CCW looking at the shaft end of the motor
Amps
Frame size
