It sounds like the unit was disturbed by a power surge or blackout. Part of the controllers circuit was compromised and out of sync. The parts may be more expensive than a replacement unit.

SOURCE: Tuner Omits No Sound - Onkyo TX-SR605 7.1 Channels Receiver

Make sure your receiver is hooked up to proper AM and FM antennae. Try switching to AM, scan stations. If you hear AM static and/or weak signals the problem could be antennas are not hooked up. FM has AFT which blocks out weak or noisey stations and you wont hear anything without ant.

SOURCE: no sound from the receiver

Loose connection or cold solder and cleaning problem this is the main caused of no sound..Cold solder issues - each component is soldered into small holes on the printed circuit board which in turn connects said component to the other components. Due to time, heat, use, some solder joints would be cracked or loose. It is possible that the cold solder is still minimally connected (hanging by a thread). When the receiver turns on heat would be generated which would be sufficient to further loosen up the solder joint to the point it no longer provides electrical contact. Jarring the unit creates movement inside enough to re establish the contact, sometime good enough sometimes not enough.

Again, since the unit still operates (sometimes) then it is highly probable that there are no defective components. As you have surmised, it is possibly a loose connection, solder joints are "connections" except that molten soldering lead is used to attach/connect the component to the board, "loose connection" in this sense is equal to "cold solder".

Again on the assumption of no defective parts, then seeking a more experienced buddy for the soldering might be to your advantage. This is of course in addition to the possible electrical hazards when repairing....

Good luck:

SOURCE: My Onkyo tx sr502 quit producing sound?

I have the same problem. It's definitely the pre-amplifier board (board with speaker terminals).I did not quite nail the exact component yet but I replaced with a working one and got back sound output.

I'll second what dennisae said. I've got a TX-NR708 that had all sorts of video issues after about 6 months of use until I got the HDMI board replaced. This seems to be an issue with this brand over a wide number of models.

No sound from unit, sometimes you get sound and other times nothing. When you do get sound everything works fine. Everything is hooked up properly, shut the unit off one day then turned it on next day and...

well there may be a simple solution, it could quite possibly be a fuse... if you open it up, after the power converter box and before it hits electronics, ther should be a fuse, this may be burnt out... but check inside before you go to buy a bunch of fuses as there are normally a couple spares inside, and if not, its easier to find the right replacement with the burnt out one in your hand!

Something similar happened to me. I finally gave up on my wall charger and tried connecting my PDA to my computer and pressed reset button several times. I left it connected overnight and It was working by the next morning. My guess is that my battery was completely drained and my wall charger quit working.

Palm TX: Digitizer problems - can't use all functions; i.e.all those on bottom row of screen. Soft reset and touch-screen alinement exercise doesn't seem to work.

I developed the same problem after owning my TX for about a year and a half. I found an acceptable solution by experimenting with the digitizer. Instead of tapping the very center of the bullseye, I tapped off center until I found an acceptable setting where accessing functions anywhere on the screen would work for me.

Video thru Onkyo TX-RS606 is only black&white

are you using HDMI cables or component. First I would try unplugging the composite and component video cables while the receiver is off. Plug them back in and turn it back on. If that does'nt work try setting the receiver to factory default and redo the settings. You can find how to reset to default in your user manual.
