It could be one of several things, a system reset, a firmware update but it sounds like a screen cable has become disconnected or similar fault. Before doing anything, is it still under warranty, if so its best to go back to the vendor or leapfrog and request an exchange. Here's the url to their support page.
It might be the batteries or the brand of batteries. My son has had the tag reader for over a year now and we seldom change the batteries. Leapfrog may be against it, but we use rechargable enegerizer batteries. I can count on 1 hand how many times I've changed the batteries in the last 18 months.
In order to change the battery on the tag "reading pen" turn it over and there is what looks like a flat head screw head on the back of the tag, it should be white. Give that a quarter turn and the back should pop off, ours was kind of tough to get off but after the back comes off you can replace the 2 AAA batteries. I believe the "pen" has to be turned on to connect to the computer so this might fix your connection problem also.
