Usually Lumix says "This memory card is protected" when it means that the card has been locked with the little switch on the card (SD card). The message you report may mean something else.
the SD cards have a physical lock on them, if you hold the card with the cut corner pointing away and to the right the lock will be on the top left edge. Make sure it is not in the locked position. Also if the card has not been formatted for the camera you may get that message
