Gateway media recovery lost

I found instructions on the internet to reset a registry value on my Gateway 827gm desktop so that I could reset second set of media recovery discs. I did it once but can not find those instructions again. I am going to rebuild my desktop again at the end of the month. Can you help find that registry key?

I have a Gateway laptop. never heard of reseting media recovery disks? you can sometimes order recovering disks from Gateway not sure which registry key you are talking about? if you want to access registry, there are commands in DOS, if your pc is running. go to search box, type registry commands-it may guide you. not sure about you OS or pc age.

So you have an OEM Windows disc with the activation code? You should be able to install the OS from this. Try taking the battery out for an hour then installing XP. Also go into setup and set the CDROM as first boot device. If Windows installs go back and change first boot device to HDD. If it still won't install try a different CDROM drive. I have heard that some CDROM drives will not install XP. I don't know why but I've heard this rumor. There is also a jumper on the motherboard that resets the CMOS to default. I think it is J1, J2? Try switching that to the other position and turn on the unit. Shut down and move the jumper back. That is all I can think of right now.

SOURCE: gateway desktop xp starts then flashes blue screen for split seco

Sometimes they make the recovery disk with windows on it, but not the programs that start windows during the boot up phase. One of the three main files that boots into windows is corrputed or your Master Boot Record is missing. There are two options you can try without the OS disc so lets see if one of those will work: 1) boot up and press F8 to enter safe mode. Once in safe mode sometimes you can also get into window because just the minimum of the program is loaded. F8 Safe Mode>in windows>click start>accesories>system tools>system restore. It will allow you to restore your computer to a prior date before you have problems. 2)if that don;'t work then F8 safe mode and while in safe mode choose Last Known Configuration. Kinda works the same way as restoe but you don't have to be in windows to do it. If those don't work then get your hands on a windows xp disc, anyone's will do, don't have to be yours. Let me know how it goes.
Rate this solution. You can also find out about this at support.microsoft.com>help and support>type in Windows XP boot disk in the search engine. If those don't work let me know and we'll move on to phase II.

From a computer that has internet access, download the appropriate ethernet driver for your network card from the link above. As for the recovery disk, you'll have to contact Gateway for a replacement disk.

Enter password unlock system

Getting locked out of your Gateway computer can be frustrating, especially when you have school or work deadlines.
You can get locked out of your Gateway computer in cases where a password-protected screensaver became corrupt, or if the you have set the default screensaver to use a screensaver that does not exist.
Gateway computers come with Microsoft Windows XP and 2000, including the professional versions of both.
Knowing how to unlock your a Gateway computer can save you time and irritation.

Press the "Ctrl," "Alt" and "Delete" keys on your keyboard simultaneously to unlock your Gateway computer.
Type the last logged-on user's login information and click "OK" if you see a locked computer message along with "Only domain/username or an administrator can unlock this computer."

Press the "Ctrl," "Alt" and "Delete" keys once again when you see the Unlock Computer window disappear.
Log on as usual.

Method 2

Shut down the locked Gateway computer by using the Microsoft Windows Resource Kit Shutdown tool. This tool shuts down and restarts a Windows 2000- or NT 4.0-based Gateway computer. Note the dialog box that comes up called System Shutdown.

Wait for the shutdown timer to run out and see the Welcome to Windows box displayed on the screen.

Press "Ctrl," "Alt" and "Delete," which unlocks the computer.
Log onto your Gateway computer normally.

Method 3: Backup, Modify and Restore the Registry

Click "Start" and "Run," then type in the command below in the field box exactly as printed:
%SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Click "Create a Restore Point," then click "Next" on the Welcome to System Restore page that appears.

Type any name for the restore point, then click "Create" on the Create a Restore Point page. Click "Close" after creating the restore point.
Perform this procedure before you make changes to the registry, just in case you make an error; otherwise, incorrect registry changes could create serious problems with your computer.

Click "Yes" if you receive a prompt to turn on System Restore at this point.
Clear the "Turn Off System Restore" check box by clicking on it, then click "OK," and repeat.

Click "Start," then type "regedt32.exe" (without the quotes) in search field box to modify the registry and unlock the computer. Press the "Enter" key on your keyboard.

Locate the scrnsave.exe value under the registry key below:
HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Desktop

Click "String" on the Edit menu, type "logon.scr" (without the quotes), then click "OK."

Look for the ScreenSaverIsSecure value, then click "String" on the Edit menu, type "0," then click "OK."

Quit the Registry Editor

Click "Start" and "Run," then type the command below exactly as printed to restore the registry, then click "OK":
%SystemRoot%\System32\Restore\Rstrui.exe

Click "Restore My Computer to an Earlier Time" on the Welcome to System Restore page, then click "Next."
Note your computer may already be selected to restore to an earlier time--in this case, just click "Next."

Click the system checkpoint on the Select a Restore Point page.
Click "Guided Help (Registry Backup)," then click "Next" on the "On This List Select the Restore Point" area.
Click "OK" if you see a System Restore message listing all the configuration changes it will make.

Click "Next" when you come to the Confirm Restore Point Selection page.
System Restore will now restore the Windows XP configuration you had at an earlier time, and then it will restart your Gateway computer.

Log onto your computer as usual, and then click "OK" when you see the System Restore Confirmation page.

How do I use the F9, F10, F11 and F12 keys?

Some Gateway (desktop) computers do not have the dedicated F9, F10, F11 and F12 keys, but for a Gateway laptop, those four keys have dual functions for media control (which is the default use) or as Function keys. However, to use F-9 through F12 as Function keys, you must first press the Fn Key and then press the desired F-key. The Fn key is the second key to the right of the spacebar. To launch the Gateway Recovery process during start-up, you must press Alt+Fn+F10.
