I found instructions on the internet to reset a registry value on my Gateway 827gm desktop so that I could reset second set of media recovery discs. I did it once but can not find those instructions again. I am going to rebuild my desktop again at the end of the month. Can you help find that registry key?

I have a Gateway laptop. never heard of reseting media recovery disks? you can sometimes order recovering disks from Gateway not sure which registry key you are talking about? if you want to access registry, there are commands in DOS, if your pc is running. go to search box, type registry commands-it may guide you. not sure about you OS or pc age.

So you have an OEM Windows disc with the activation code? You should be able to install the OS from this. Try taking the battery out for an hour then installing XP. Also go into setup and set the CDROM as first boot device. If Windows installs go back and change first boot device to HDD. If it still won't install try a different CDROM drive. I have heard that some CDROM drives will not install XP. I don't know why but I've heard this rumor. There is also a jumper on the motherboard that resets the CMOS to default. I think it is J1, J2? Try switching that to the other position and turn on the unit. Shut down and move the jumper back. That is all I can think of right now.

Sometimes they make the recovery disk with windows on it, but not the programs that start windows during the boot up phase. One of the three main files that boots into windows is corrputed or your Master Boot Record is missing. There are two options you can try without the OS disc so lets see if one of those will work: 1) boot up and press F8 to enter safe mode. Once in safe mode sometimes you can also get into window because just the minimum of the program is loaded. F8 Safe Mode>in windows>click start>accesories>system tools>system restore. It will allow you to restore your computer to a prior date before you have problems. 2)if that don;'t work then F8 safe mode and while in safe mode choose Last Known Configuration. Kinda works the same way as restoe but you don't have to be in windows to do it. If those don't work then get your hands on a windows xp disc, anyone's will do, don't have to be yours. Let me know how it goes.
Rate this solution. You can also find out about this at support.microsoft.com>help and support>type in Windows XP boot disk in the search engine. If those don't work let me know and we'll move on to phase II.

From a computer that has internet access, download the appropriate ethernet driver for your network card from the link above. As for the recovery disk, you'll have to contact Gateway for a replacement disk.
