Make sure that you have the turntable connected to the PHONO input. If there is none (I don't know your specific model), then you will need a phono pre-amp. Connect the output of the pre-amp to tape-in or Aux in and the unit should work as expected. The alternative is that you may have the tape monitor turned on. Check that as well.
This unit is old enough to have pre-out and amp-in connectors on the back. Make sure that those are connected to each other. Use standard RCA cables.
If none of those resolve the problem, there is an internal problem that will need a bench to resolve.
Try a Harmony by logitech. They will control every feature of every piece of product that you have. Prices start around 50 on ebay. The software for programming is excellent and very user friendly. Their tech support speaks to you in understandable language if you have a problem. I've probably programmed a thousand or so to date and they are very reliable. The only issue I have with them is Don't Drop Them on a hard surface, the LCD's are pretty fragile. If you have young kids, keep them away from it!. With a little tweaking in the program, you can have a very reliable and effective remote for very little $.
