The unit will not turn on. When you move the manual switch nothing happens. This happened rather suddenly after a child had been using it. Could the remote have messed with a function or anything?

Re you referring to the interior or exterior handles....or both? If the doors are not locked and only the interior handles do not work, it is possible that the child safety switches are activated. This prevents the accidental opening of the doors by a child while the car is in motion. The owners manual will have the procedure to disable this feature.
no power button has to be able to use just in case something goes wrong, some home don't have a switch on wall to turn of the unit so the power button is always able to be used to turn off the unit. opening the door and other parts cannot be used with the lock on.
The child lock has been enabled on the microwave. To disable the lock, press and hold 0 until the Locked message disappears from the screen. To set the Lock, press Stop/Clear (to clear the display) and then press and hold the 0 pad until the phrase Lock appears and you hear two beeps.
dear friend-you have two things that can be at fault at this stage, first of it can be the electrical unit behind the ignition that is intermittend,or as you say you move the gearshift around meaning that you have a auto,so you have a micro switch(neutral switch) that can be faulty.check these out and it should solve you problem.
