There is normally three reasons:
1. The album you are trying to copy is connected to iCloud Music Library. If you see a Disconnected icon in the upper-right corner of iTunes, you’re not connected to iCloud Music Library. Click the icon to reconnect.
The song isn’t in Apple Music or isn’t available in your current country or region
2. You have Restrictions turned on for explicit lyrics
There are changes or edits to an album.
Delete that grayed out album from your library and add it back from the Apple Music catalog

As for me, I am tired of the slow and bloated iTunes to transfer music between iPhone and computer. Another way to do the transfer, is to use a third party tool, which enables users to add music from computer to iPhone or edit, delete files on your iPhone through the program, and even make backups of your music on your phone to your computer. You can have a try, it is called FoneTrans for iOS, a music transfer tool. How to Transfer Music from iPhone to Computer

If you wan to transfer music from iPhone back to your computer, you need to use third party software. iTunes can't help you to do this. It can only transfer music from computer to iPhone. Sometimes, you need to backup music from iPhone to computer, you need to use iPhone Transfer software. It can easily transfer music from iPhone to computer. It can also transfer videos, photos, contacts, messages, playlist and other data from iPhone to PC easily.

Transferring music from computer to iPod/iPhone is a common situation. In fact, the process is so easy to follow if you use FonePaw iOS Transfer to move song. First you should connect iPod/iPhone into computer with USB cable. Then choose music and start to transfer music from computer to iPod/iPhone. Finally you can enjoy the music on iPod/iPhone.

Try connecting iPhone to USB port & open iTunes.
When iPhone appears under devices, highlight iPhone.
Select Summary/Options and check Manually manage music and videos.
Can then transfer songs from iTunes music library to iPhone.
Only way to transfer songs from iPhone to computer is in iTunes File Menu/ Transfer purchases from Iphone, which of course only works with songs purchased from iTunes store.

Other option is to use Sync which offers options All songs and playlists or Selected playlists

You need to create a playlist for the iPhone. This isn't intuitive and I don't know why it's this way. It works great, there just isn't anything explaining what to do. This seems to snag Windows users the most. Maybe Mac users are already used to doing things this way? I don't know.

Below is a picture of my iTunes. Look down in the lower-left corner and see that my playlist is highlighted. At the very bottom-left corner you can click the plus sign to create a new playlist. Then drag all of the music you want to the playlist. Finally, in the music tab of your iPhone, make sure you click the playlist you just made to sync all music on that list to your phone.

This will do the trick.

I just had this problem and it turned out to be... It didn't like my iPod cable. Switched to the iPhone cable and it worked.
Seems to be an iPhone 2.0 prob, or 3g prob, since I was using the iPod cable to sync my old iPhone just fine.

Transfer music to MP3 from my phone

If you'a an iPhone user, you can use iTunes to transfer music from iPhone to computer first. You may have well known that iTunes only transfers purchased items from iPhone to iTunes library, so iPhone users can move purchased songs from iPhone to iTunes library.
  1. Run iTunes and click "Edit > Preferences > Device > Prevent iPhones, iPods and iPads from syncing automatically" at the upper left corner of iTunes window.
  2. Plug iPhone into computer via the USB cable, and then click "File > Device > Transfer Purchases" at the upper left corner.
  3. iTunes will start to sync all the purchased items back to its library.
After the syncing process, you will get the music files in your iTunes library, including the purchased music files. You are able to find the music files in the folder of your iTunes media files on your computer.

The next step is really easy. Since the music you want is already saved on your computer, you can now simply connect your MP3 player, drag and drop to transfer songs.

On the contrary, here's also a guide about Three Ways to Transfer MP3 Files to iPhone in case you need help.

Is there any way to transfer my iTunes music to my iPhone or do I have to pay just to have music on my phone

Use the power cord for the iPhone. It should be the USB connector on one end and the small plug on the other end. Plug the USB into the computer and open up iTunes. Under the FILE menu at the top, there should be a pull down sub menu that say "devices" SYNC.
Your iPhone will appear on the side bar once you switch to the "Playlist" page. You can drag a whole playlist into your phone icon or do individual tracks. At least, that's what I do.
Let me know if this works for you.
