This enclosure allows for the reuse of older hard drives. Earlier computers connected to the hard drives via a flat cable IDE. These enclosures convert the older style drives to a USB interface. Your hard drive's Master Boot Record might be the problem. If it was corrupted then the bios will not see a bootable hard drive.

Three things you have to do in order to solve this.

1. purchase a 2.5" external enclosure, remove the hard drive and put it in there.
2. purchase another 2.5" hard drive for the laptop and reinstall Windows.
3. once the reinstall is done, plug the enclosure into the laptop by the usb cable and copy your data to the new hard drive.

Purchase an "empty" external enclosure, and "transplant" the disk-drive from your MyBook into the empty enclosure. All your files will be intact.

Yes just fixed mine. Went to radio shack bought a gigaware sata 3.5 external enclosure.
Took the harddrive out of old enclosure. pryed off external alluminum case to expose a panel that sticks out to the side where the broken usb plug went. Wiggled that off then placed in new enclosure fits good. secured with old screws. plugged it in and it works great. The new usb plug is much sturdier. The external case cost me about $40.00 and some change but Im glad i retreaved my data. I will never buy another seagate. Hope this helps...Alan

Most of the time, you will need a hard drive enclosure that will allow the IDE or SATA connection to USB connection. These enclosures will allow you to insert the drive in the housing which will offer the USB connection cable from the enclosure. Check Ebay or other vendors for external hard drive enclosures.

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Or, buy an "empty" external disk-drive enclosure, for about $30, and "transplant" your disk-drive into this enclosure.

There are a few reasons this would happen, The options are a faulty driver in your PC, a failed circuit board in the enclosure or a failed circuit in the drive itself.

First try the drive on a different PC and see if it works. If it does reply back and we can look into the failed driver. If it doesn't then take it to your local PC shop and have the technicians move the hard drive into a new enclosure.

If it works in the new enclosure buy the enclosure and your on the way. If it doesn't, then the hard drive itself is the problem. If that is the case you will need the help of a data recovery pro to retrieve your data.
