I first noticed this while playing Eternal Sonata and just assumed it was a game issue. I would boot up and play for about 5 minutes and in the middle of a fight or even just walking around, the screen would freeze even though the sound was still going in the background. The controller also stopped responding. I'd have to turn it off with the powerbutton in the front of the box.
But then yesterday I was watching a movie (DVD) and the same thing happened, the movie kept playing by sound, but the screen was frozen.
Btw, after I power it off and on again, it never happens again. It's always within 5-10 minutes of turning on after not having played for a full day.
When it happens, give it some time, like 5-10 min. the ps3 is most likely accessing the hard drive, and if it is, shutting down in the middle of it could currupt your hdd. if it doesnt work, even after 10 min, call sony tech support, but if it works fine afterwords, i dont see why it would be neccessary. unless it gets worse, i think you should just turn it on, turn it off after a few min, then back on, and then play.
