The charging light should remain on as long as the charger is plugged in and charging I suggest you try to troubkeshoot your charger as it might be faulty.
Motherboard is bad that's why the ac adapter light will turn off ,possible short ciruit on the board. you need to have a replacement for it. Call dell tech support for repair.
Replace the charger, it probably overheat and died. Try with a voltmeter to measure the output power (usually aroud 19 V DC) Then the tricky part, try to power something else with the charger , something who might work with the output power (a car light bulb for exemple). If it does work then you have a short cut on the motherboard of your laptop if it's the case replace the laptop, it's the hell of a job to repair the motherboard... good luck
try connecting ac adapter alone without the laptop, check if ac adapter light will stay green or blue. try another power outlet using the ac adapter alone without the laptop check if the ac adapter light will stay as green or blue. if all fails replace ac adapter.
if ac adapter stays green or blue try connecting to the laptop without the batt, check if the ac adapter light will stay on, if yes then try connecting ac adapter to laptop with the batt plugin check if the light stays green. if not update the BIOS. if fails replace motherboard.
Unplug the battery from the laptop and then plug the AC adaptor into the laptop. If the green light still goes off then your motherboard is shorting out the adaptor and the motherboard needs to be replaced.
Ok... that makes a little more sense... Here is what i want you to check... Disconnect the AC Adapter from the system and plug it into the mains, check the LED light (Should be Green). Then plug in the connector to the laptop, check the LED. If the LED turns off when you connect the laptop. Your Laptop motherboard needs to be changed.
