I have a Sony Vaio PCG-K30 laptop. it had an overheating problem therefore yesterday I decided to open my laptop and clean the fan and heatsink. I removed the fan and I saw CPU(P4) was under the heatsink, anyway I cleaned it up with dust spray and I put the whole cooling system back. When I tried to turned it on, it did not work. What happens is, it turns on maybe half second, cause I see the leds are lighting, and then smt in the motherboard turns it off. I checked the connections and it looks good to me. I do not know what to do. Any idea would help much.
I hope that you did not burn the chip of the CPU... The first quick fix is going to be that you go to the local junk shop and buy some of the heat conducting compound. You, very carefully remove the CPU and follow the instructions of the compound package, you apply the compound. It is highly advisable that you construct a jury rigged bracelet with a wire attached and you put it on your wrist and ground yourself to a ground point on the computer. If you still have problems, I can still help you, but I will need to have certain info. Name of compter =Sony Vaio, model number, Motherboard ID and exactly your story, which you said very mice above, but I will not be able to get to it (it goes to the archives). I feel confident that you will be able to fix your computer... Thank you for considering our service...
My name is Constantin (arzconst is my nickname at the Fixya.com)
By removing the heatsink and cleaning it, you may have wipe d the heat sink compund, or the heatsink is not well attached to the base and is not making full contact with the CPU.
Check for this two conditions, and correct them.
Everything should be fine.
