I have a Toro 22" recycler mower with 6.5 HP Tecumseh engine. The other day it just stopped on me while using it. Now the pull cord will not budge. I can turn the blade by hand, nothing is blocking it. I removed the housing and when I lift the pully system out, the cord will pull out all the way. It just won't pull at all when it's on the mower.

Tried the straw in the sparkplug hole bit and the straw did not move when I turned the blade. The screen over the cord does turn with the blade, however.

Also, the Toro Web site's parts list for my model does not list a magneto. Is there another name for it? (that is, if my engine isn't junk).

Thanks for your prompt response. Sorry I couldn't be as quick. I'm working two jobs these days.

You can move the blade by hand and you can pull the cord if the pull station is removed from the shaft.?
well. there is a "not too complicated " way to see whats going on. Try taking the spark plug boot off....and the spark plug. then stick something safe" Lets say a drinking straw" into the spark plug hole.....next lets turn this lawn mower blade and see if the blade and crankshaft are all still in one piece.
If the straw goes deeper and then pushes back out...then the blade to crankshaft check out ok. if not..then the engine ceased and broke the blade shaft..(thus blade moves while motor and cord doesnt)
Now if they both DO move properly then i would observe the screen that covers the cord (that screen that spins while its usually running) and see if that moves in sync with the blade moving.if yes i would suspect the magneto has spun a bearing. if it doesnt move then i would suspect a broken shaft between the motor and the magneto . What puzzles me is that you say it was running when it went dead and been locked up since. Which kinda points me to a locked up Magneto. which is too hard to pull by hand but still can be moved by the blade (moving the blade has more leverage than the pull cord-- little circle and big circle type of leverage) You can replace the Magneto if you order the parts. (and borrow the neighbors lawnmower for a couple of "mows") Which is secured to the shaft by bolts and screws. and a "key" on the shaft (which also makes it stay in alignment) relatively simple to do if you are handy.
Hope this helps you out to get started.

Good Luck!

If the piston isn't going up and down when you turn the engine, the motor needs some serious major internal work or can be considered junk. likely a broken connecting rod.

Unjam mower starter cord

If you mean that you cannot pull the engine over then remove your spark plug and try with plug out. If it turns over with no plug in then you probably have a carboned up head. Remove head and carbon and reinstall head with a new head gasket.

How to fix stuck pull cord of a 22 inch Toro Recycler lawn mower

Is the engine seized?. Try turning the blade and if it won't turn then you have a seized engine. If that is ok your recoil has a stuck part possibly something has broken off inside. If it's an older model try shooting WD40 inside the recoil as it could be rusty.

How do I open the case around the pull cord on a Torro 22" recycler lawn mower?

It's been a while since I pulled one of those engines apart - the LV195 engines came in 2 versions. One has a detachable recoil starter that is held on by 2 screws, the other is an integral part of the cowling. Either way, the repair procedure is the same - remove the starter, or entire cowling as appropriate (may need to remove some plastic and the tank first), remove label on top, SUPPORT THE ASSEMBLY ON A DEEP WELL SOCKET or similar and drift out the central roll-pin into the centre of the socket drive the pin from outside to inside. If you don't support it, it WILL bend and make it useless. Make a note of the order of the washers and springs etc, then fit a repair kit.

Toro 6.5 HP Self propelled walk behind 22

take the top cover off the engine. you will see the coil on top there. unplug the wire that plugs into it. put the cover back on and try to start it. if it starts it is not the coil. try a different spark plug first. pull the cord with the plug out to get all the gas out of the engine.

Toro recycler 20017 is very hard to start. it has to be primed many times. after it run a while it starts on one pull.

The carburetor may need to be serviced. You need to find a parts shop that handles Tecumseh parts. You will most likely need a rebuild kit for the carburetor. The carburetor part number is 640303. The rebuild kit is 632809. The Tecumseh engine company shut its' doors 3 years ago. Finding parts is becoming harder and harder. I've heard that someone has bought Tecumseh over the winter but it is unknown when the new parts will hit the market. Best of luck to you.

We have a brand new toro 22 in Recycler lawn mower that we have used 2x and today it stopped working. We are unable to pull the start cord more than 2 inches out so obviously we cant start it. Help.

Check the oil ... does it have oil in it?

Disconnect the spark plug, tip the mower up, can you move the blade? If the blade will not move, the motor may be seized.

No oil = ruined motor ...

If the blade will move freely, there is a recoil starter problem.

I have a Toro electric start 22'' inch lawmnower Model No. 20018 with a Tecumseh LEV 90-120 engine. The mower may be started with the electric start or manually with the cord. The battery was in need of...

It sounds like the starter drive may be jammed. It should not be engaged unless you are using the starter motor. Take the spark plug wire off, put on heavy leather gloves, and try turning the blade by hand to dislodge the starter drive. If it does dislodge, plug the spark plug wire back up and try the pull start again.

Toro self propelled 22 inch recycler lawn mower start pull cord is "stuck"

Casey,

My son just bought a new Toro self propelled 22" recycler and has had problems on two different occasions. The mower just bogs down to a stop and when he tried to pull the starter cord, it was very VERY difficult to pull. At first I thought the engine had seized up for some reason (no oil?), but we found the problem.

First, disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug (to avoid the engine starting); tip the mower on its side and check very carefully the pulley and transmission belt. In his case, a piece of wood had gotten stuck between the belt and the pulley. Removing it fixed the problem (now he mows a little higher so as not to get so close to any debris). (We did have one further problem after that - the engine would not start - not even fire. After pulling and pulling, checking for gas, and checking that the air filter was cleean, we decided to check if the cylinder was flooded - we removed the spark plug, wiped and dried if off, and replaced it. It started right away.)

This belt 'n pulley arrangement isn't the best idea, if you ask me.

Good luck.
