My Trinitron 36 inch XBR Sony makes horizontal lines. The picture shrinks vertically. When I hit it, the picture comes back for a moment then does the same thing. A friend said it is the verticallity. I removed the back but I wouldn't where to look for the capacitor. Can I do it without any outside help?

This problem usually lies on the horizontal output transistor, try to check also for shorted diode. you can buy ftom any electronic parts dealer or radio shacks stores
Try turning off power and let set cool completely. Then turn back on. Letting it cool complety re-arms the autmatic degaussing circuit. It may take several cycles to completly clear it up.
Your tv needs to be put into service mode with the original Sony remote control and then set the vertical\horizontal size parameter to the correct values and then burn the new settings to memory Google " sony tv service mode " and you should find the procedure. Good Luck! Write back if you have problems. barneyluc
The 6 or 7 blinks usually indicate a problem in the horizontal circuit. Since the TV recovered once, the problem is most likely to be a bad solder connection in that area. If you can solder, resolder any connections on the board that appear grainy or have rings. That may resolve the problem. If not, update this and we'll look elsewhere for defective parts.
You need to change your vertical IC, along with some capacitors around the vertical IC. Capacitor with value 220UF, 10uf, 470uf and finally 1000uf. Doing this will fix the set. Total cost under $40
You have a bad solder connection in the vertical circuit. This will require you to resolder these bad connections before it blows out the vertical output IC or other parts in the circuit. Do this ASAP before you make a small repair into a large one. If you have no solid state printed circuit board experience, please play it safe and take the set into a pro to do this for you. Good Luck
