Hello Mary;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

You are locked in the defrost mode. About every 8-10 hours your freezer will go into a defrost mode for 20-30 minutes. This is where all of the components will shut down except for the light.

You have water on the floor because your condenser fan and compressor is shut down.

You did not provide a model number. Your model number is on the inside wall of your freezer near the top. So, I can only guess.

Lets take your freezer out of the defrost mode. In the lower back on the left hand side is your defrost timer (This may also be in the lower front depending on the model). Following is a picture of what a defrost timer looks like.

GE UPRIGHT FREEZER NOT FREEZING. - 23573129-rcp3vehoqdbldikr0vsfofzb-3-0.jpg

The time is mounted on the back of a plate and held on with two screws. The plate has a hole through it to give you access to the round knob on the left. The knob has a slot in it. With a flat head screw driver turn the knob clockwise. You will hear a click. Turn one click at a time until the freezer turns on.

The timer cost about $20.00. You can replace it yourself. Unplug the freezer. Unscrew the timer. Remove the connector on the right.

You need to replace the timer or you will have icing problems.

Send me your model number and I will tell you what the part number is.

SOURCE: Freezer starting to defrost

Hi,
As the weather is getting warmer for many people their freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...

Check out this tip that I wrote about that... it is a great place to start trouble shooting your unit...and something that you can do rather then calling a repair person to do a simple thing for you...

Frigidaire upright FFU17f9gw3 temperture light is on and food is starting to thaw. I put alot of freezer jam in freezer yesterday

If the control is "ON" and the compressor is not running, you will need a start relay... Make sure you didn't accidentally turn it off by pushing food against the control knob!

GE FUF14 14DPHRWH purchased 082105. No problems until today water was dripping out the front corner and food had begun thawing. Fan is running. Located out in the garage on a concrete floor.

I don't knowabout the ONLY solution. Is the drain plugged? If so the condenser could be frozen over and therfore no cooling even though fan, compressor and defroster are working. How is 134 level? 124 WILL run below 55 degrees. Duh, that's what's in your car and it will work before the engine compqartment is warm. It may not work as well because of the coefficient of expansion/contraction but it still does "work."

My Frigidaire upright freezer is only 4 years old & isn't working

freezers have safety devices to protect themselves. The compressor has an internal overload to keep it from overheating. some have external reset buttons and some do not. either way the cause must be corrected. if the freezer was low on refrigerant you would see signs of oil near the coils, tubing, or compressor. If there is no leak, it overheats when there is airflow restrictions(dirty coils) or a fan has stopped working. only a few screws keep you from seeing all there is to see. If it is clean and the fan is running, then the compressor may just be the culprit

Won't freeze after door was left open

Having the door open has introduced an excess of humidity and therefore condensate/ice into the freezer coils. The coils are therefore iced over. You have choices depending upon your skill level. You might: allow the unit to sit unplugged with the door open until the excess ice thaws out and wets the floor underneath, which may take from 6 to 24 hours. You might: do this, adding some heat source in the freezer to accelerate the process. You might: locate the defrot timer, advancing the timer until a click is heard indicating the unit is in defrost, and repeat after about 15 minutes to defrost the unit with it's own heater. You might: let it recover just as it is but it will take a couple of days to clear itself.

GE Freezer Not Freezing

I am not an expert, but if the defrost heater is not working, then maybe when it was unpluged the coils didn't completly unthaw. If not, the freezer still will not cool properly.
