The problem is most likely due to the little optical sensor assembly on the Transfer Belt getting covered up with toner. When you pull the transfer belt unit out and flip it over to the right, it will be located on the top left of the unit. It looks like a little rectangle sticking out over the edge of the plastic transfer belt. Remove the sensor assembly by removing the screws around it, and it should come right off (will have some wires running to it). You can further disassemble the sensor by removing the circuit board holding the LED and receiver. You'll have to clean toner out of or off of both of these. Mine had more on the emitter (LED), but YMMV. Be careful removing the circuit boards, because if you break it, it's $330US for a new transfer belt. 8-o
Good luck!

the transfer roller is a foam roller that transfers the toner onto the paper. It will be visible with toner removed, a little wider than a piece of paper, and about the thickness of a roll of quarters. I don't know how to physically remove it on your model, but transfer roller issues in general can be remedied by removing the transfer roller and wrapping it in packing tape until the tape comes off clean.
While you're in there, vacuum everything out for good measure; but never, ever use canned air on a laser printer.
