I have the same problem. I would like to try the solution of changing the battery. I am not sure how to do that. I found the button battery and am hoping that is the one being talked about. However, it does not seem to be easy to get out. Does anyone know how to change this button battery?

Its the bios battrie is dead. simply replace the batt and it will work or just pull the bat set the time and it will restart then you will jsut have to do that every time you start up

Get a hold of an OS disk and when it askes would you like to boot from disk do it, it should fix itself if not try re-installing your OS im 99.8% sure that will work

Solution #3 worked great for me. I simply removed the battery ( located under the memory flap ) and once I hit enter at the date and time ... all went well. Just purchased a new batt once I had a chance.

Replace the internal battery and it will boot. This battery keeps the Date and Time. Without the battery the date and time cannot be programed and the computer will not boot.

Rippey574 got it right, in that it's a dead backup battery.

To access the battery, for replacement, remove the memory cover on the bottom of the laptop. un-plug the battery cable from the connector. Find a replacement battery(may need to get on with similar specs, and patch the old connector onto the new battery). and install it in the same position, using double sided tape.

As per the IBM hardware maintenance manual... this should solve those two issues. If, after installing a NEW battery, the errors remain, it's possible you installed your battery hack with reverse polarity. triple check now(it may already be too late, but it's worth trying to solve).

If the standard BACKUP battery replacment doesn't work, then it may be an issue with the motherboard(broken trace, exploded capacitor, etc) that will require time and skill... or if those are lacking, it becomes an e-bay for parts item.

I am getting an error code of 00161 and 00163 on my ibm think pad 2635

Error code 161 means your CMOS battery is dead and 163 is that system date and time are not set (which make sense as the CMOS battery is dead).
You need to replaced your CMOS motherboard battery to resolved this issue.

I have several 600's and they all have the same issue. They are giving 161 192 163 errors. I replaced the battery in them and then go to try and setup the time. However, instead of letting me set the...

Hi,

161 = CMOS configuration lost (battery has died).

163 = CMOS error; Clock is not updating.

192 = System fan is faulty, not plugged into the system board or the system board itself is faulty.

Whe you replaced the RTC (real time clock/BIOS battery) did you make sure that the CPU fan was working?

If it is then go back into the BIOS and reset it to defaults. Save the changes and reboot, then go back into the BIOS and try to set the time and date.

Error

I do not think you fixed the CMOS battery - (backup battery = CMOS battery) According to the error codes, you have a dead backup battery and the time is not set. Makes sense? 161
(Dead battery.) 1. Go to Checking the Backup Battery
2. Backup battery.
3. System board.
163
(Time and date were not set.) 1. Set time and date.
2. System board.

hope this will help.

174 error message on thinkpad 380

Try this:
Start with the machine OFF, hold down and CONTINUE TO HOLD the "F1" key and turn on the power WHILE STILL HOLDING DOWN "F1"
This should get you into the bios/setup, which on most thinkpads is pretty simple and self explanatory. You can reset the date, and something called "initialize" as I remember.
POST YOUR MODEL NUMBER!!!!
Ibm.com's support is famous for having very good, extensive support for thinkpads. I searched for this error no. but we really need the model number

Hi my IBM 2635-6AU, ThinkPad 380ED 26356AU screen is dark and i cant see

From what you are stating it seems like your backlight in your lcd needs to be replaced. Plug an external monitor up to your laptop. Press the fn & f key (the one with the picture of a monitor in it.) Your diplay should project to the monitor. Display is ok.....replace the backlight.

Hope this helps you
