1. Check if any paper is jammed.
If jammed, make sure to take out all the jammed paper.
2. After taking out jammed paper, turn the fax off, then turn it back on with [ON/OFF].

Movement of the ink cartridge holder is blocked. There may be a scrap of paper, or staple, or paper clip binding the cartridge from moving. Check for foreign objects. Press and hold the on / off button to power down the fax. Unplug it from the wall outlet for 5 minutes. Plug it back in and power up. Also, check to make sure the cartridge is installed correctly by removing and reinstalling it. If the same error occurs, contact Canon service rep.

my fax Canon JX201 displays the message CHECK 5100

5100 is a carriage error, check the timing strip for contamination(plastic strip about 1/4" in width) 
The unit is not homing, check for obstructions.

I had this problem and solved it = )
You turn off the fax, take the paper out, then open the cover just after you turn it back on.
Leave it open for a minute and let the cartridge go back and forward close the cover and wait till it tell you to press stop and it should be back to normal.

- DISCONNECT THE PRINTER OF THE POWER
- OPEN THE DOOR AND CONNECT TO POWER
- TURN ON
- AND YOU GO !!!
