You'll need to have your original manufacturer disks that came with the PC or laptop and do a system rebuild.

If you don't have those, you can try contacting Microsoft to see if you can buy the OS disk without buying the license, since the license sticker is on your PC. This usually takes some perserverence.

As a last resort, you could buy a new license of the OS of choice, perhaps upgrading to Vista or Windows 7 when it comes out. You might need to add RAM for this option.

You either need the operating systems disk sent by your manufacturer or a Windows OS disk you've purchased. Boot from the disk and follow the insrtuctions to install a fresh copy of the operating system.

I have a computer from my husband who passed away. How do I change password which I don't know and "wipe it clean" so that I can take it over. It is a Toshiba.

Hi,

Sorry for your loss.

Most modern systems have a recovery partition which you can boot into and run a factory restore. That will wipe ALL data including all the files on the computer and put the "out of the box" factory system back on the computer.

I would advise checking it first for an private documents that might be of need later before doing a factory restore.

You can find videos on youtube for most makes showing step by step recovery instructions.

Once you are in safe mode. try to access system restore. In safe mode you will get access to the system even if it faces a severe error.
